Biodiversity is decreasing due to alien species being brought into the country by western settlers, like brush-tailed possums, rabbits, cats, goats, stoats and hundreds of invasive weedy plant species. Since the colonization of humans over 50 bird species have gone extinct. This is due in part to increased hunting. Deforestation has caused brush-tailed possums, rabbits, cats, goats, stoats, ferrets and hundreds of invasive weedy plant species to be pushed to extinction.

New Zealand is home to extremely mountainous regions, as well as sprawling plains. New Zealand has a very high number of endemic species, which means that many of the plants and animals found here are unique to New Zealand. In New Zealand they experience heavy rainfall frequently throughout the year providing rich forests. On the North Island there are angiosperms, while those in the southern portion of the island and on South Island are dominated by Gondwanan gymnosperms of the family Podocarpaceae.

Richard Henry in the 1880s, started trying to save the kakapo by translocation to islands. He started a field-based focus of conservation. This has only been reinforced by the old Wildlife Service in the 1960s and 1970s. This has helped conservation in this hotspot. New Zealand also has a tremendous amount of legislation to protect national parks like the areas in the Southern Alps. One of the biggest contributions to maintaining biodiversity is the push to eradicate invasive species. For example Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) have been eradicated to allow for further growth.
