In Australia, the integration of ICTs across the schooling system has become a priority. However, few educational applications fit well in Australian school settings in that they are not considered to be pedagogically appropriate by teachers. This can be attributed to a disconnection between theory for designing educational applications and theory relating to the application of technology in classrooms, as well as a lack of alignment between technology, the curriculum and pedagogy.

This chapter addresses secondary general music practices in the digital age. It provides theoretical arguments for why transmission practices in traditional schooling do not work adequately in the digital age. The dysfunctions of traditional schooling are then compared to the freedoms afforded through modern learning in the digital age, as it commonly occurs outside of schooling. Models presented include the hacking of a musical education through open sources in digital spaces and student empowerment and ownership of their own learning through optimization, customization, and collaboration of both content and approach.

https://web.p.ebscohost.com/ehost/ebookviewer/ebook/ZTAwMHh3d19fMTEwNzQxN19fQU41?sid=d54ab15e-697c-4e26-96f3-82ea26985a2e@redis&vid=0&format=EB&rid=1

This chapter explores intersections between technology, digital media, music, musicking, and education. At focus is the development of a hybrid approach that encompasses multifaceted ways that people enact musicianship in relation to and through digital media and technology. In the context of music education, a hybrid approach embraces overlaps, combinations, connections, and blurred lines among music and ways of being musical. It fosters classrooms that mix aspects of general music and ensembles; mobile devices and acoustic instruments; or music from multiple genres, eras, and cultures. The hybrid approach discussed in this chapter situates students’ learning and musical engagement in musical inquiry and projects. This approach is flexible enough to support students’ interests in particular musical foci in a manner that resists linear, sequential, or compartmentalized forms of instruction. The chapter provides a springboard for developing and facilitating learning environments that are comprehensive in scope and rich with possibilities.

VIEW AT:

https://web.p.ebscohost.com/ehost/ebookviewer/ebook/ZTAwMHh3d19fMTEwNzQxN19fQU41?sid=d54ab15e-697c-4e26-96f3-82ea26985a2e@redis&vid=4&format=EB&rid=1

Interactive Lecture Demonstrations use three steps in which students enact three steps. Effective interactive lecture demonstrations also require that instructors:

Identify a core concept that students will learn.

Chose a demonstration that will illustrate the core concept, ideally with an outcome different from student expectations.

Prepare written materials so that students can easily follow the prediction, experience and reflection steps.

Predict the outcome of the demonstration. Individually, and then with a partner, students explain to each other which of a set of possible outcomes is most likely to occur.

Experience the demonstration. Working in small groups, students conduct an experiment, take a survey, or work with data to determine whether their initial beliefs were confirmed (or not).

Reflect on the outcome. Students think about why they held their initial belief and in what ways the demonstration confirmed or contradicted this belief. After comparing these thoughts with other students, students individually prepare a written product on what was learned.
