In the mid 1800's, many Americans were beginning to speak against slavery, saying that in order for the U.S. to fulfill its promise of "liberty and equality to all", they would have to abolish slavery. This began in the Revolutionary Era which was partially a response to the inhumane treatment of blacks, but also a partial effort to remove them from white society. The goal of abolitionists was to end slavery.
A vocal abolitionist was William Lloyd Garrison, who was the publisher of the newspaper "The Liberator" along with the founder of he American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. Two daughters of a Southern slave owner, Angelina and Sarah Grimke, gave lectures against slavery in he north after witnessing the horrors of slavery firsthand. Two of the most well known black abolitionists were Fredrick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Both were former slaves who spoke out against slavery and inspired others to do the same. Harriet Tubman, the conductor of the Underground Railroad, helped slaves escape to the north through a network of secret safe houses. Her actions helped more than three hundred slaves to freedom despite the $40,000 bounty on her life. This fight eventually paved the way for the women's rights movement.

In 1840, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton attended the World Anti-slavery Convention that was being held in London, however, they were not allowed to speak because of the fact that they were women. They were both outraged by this, along with the other political and legal rights that women were not given. They could not vote, hold office, had to give their earned wages or land to their husbands, and there were no laws against women being abused by their husbands. Both women decided to host a nation women's rights convention in New York, where they modeled their proposal for women's rights, the Declaration of Sentiments, on the Declaration of Independence. The Seneca Falls convention demanded rights for women in places such as work, school, church, and, most of all, in the voting booth, The convention was the start of the women's rights movement. People such as Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, the Grimke sisters, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucy Stone were all active in this movement. Slowly the women's rights movement made progress. New York passed laws that allowed women to keep property and wages which Massachusetts and Indiana passed more liberal divorce laws. Finally, in 1920, women were granted the right to vote.
