- Is Prospero's servant on the island. He is the son of a witch and is able to see all of the spirits on the island. He hates Prospero and tries to use Stephano to kill him, but his plan fails.

Caliban wants to murder Prospero in revenge. 

Ariel wants his own freedom.

- Stephano is Alonso's butler. He was washed up on the island and he met up with his friend Trinculo. He is described as a swaggering braggart who loves to talk and boast about himself. He is noisy, boisterous, and gullible to Caliban. The play shows Stephano becoming a parody of a politician. 

Stephano wants to take over the island. 

- Trinculo is a jester that serves Alonso. He has washed up alone on the island after the shipwreck. He follows along with Caliban's plot to have Stephano kill Prospero. He is described as a coward. 

Trinculo wants to find shelter for the coming storm in the book when he sees Caliban.

- Alonso is the King of Naples and Ferdinand's father.  He helped Antonio to overthrow Prospero's rule. He is described as self-involved, sorrowful, and a jerk (but he doesn't mean to be one).

Alonso wants power and wants to protect his son. 

- Antonio is the Duke of Milan and Prospero's brother. He usurped Prospero and banished him to the Island. He is described as an arrogant, cynical, villain.

Antonio wants to create trouble and plot rebellion.

- Ferdinand is the Son of Alonso and falls in love with Miranda. He is described as humble, kind, and naive.

Ferdinand wants to marry Miranda

- Sebastian is the brother of Alonso. He helped Antonio to usurp Prospero. Sebastian is defined as aggressive, arrogant, and cowardly without any good intentions. 

Sebastian is described as this because what he actually wants to do is steal Alonso's throne.

- Is the advisor of Alonso, and is liked by Prospero for his kindness before being banished to the island. Arrives on the island with Alonso and his nobles.

He wants to create the island into a beautiful Utopian society.

- She has been on the island since she was 3. She is the daughter of Prospero. She falls in love with Ferdinand when he comes to the island.

Miranda wants the storm to cease and wants to marry Ferdinand.

Evidence: "I must obey. His [Prospero’s] art is of such power"

Elaboration: Prospero uses his power to keep aerial under his control. Because he is so powerful and knowledgeable he is able to manipulate him into doing anything he says.
