Q2)`Sea-level rise is one of the most damaging impacts of climate change. How far do you agree with this statement? Support your answer with examples.
Firstly, one impact of climate change will be Sea level rise. Sea level rise is the increase in the main height of the sea's surface between high tide and low tide relative to land. When there is sea level rise, it can have a negative impact on places where humans live.(social impact). For example, over 600 million people worldwide live in areas less than 10 metres above sea level which is prone to sea level rise. Two-thirds of the world's largest cities located in coastal cities are also at risk due to the rising sea levels. Higher temperatures can also cause the melting of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica. This can lead to an increase in sea level. Another example will be environment impact where Majuro Atoll will lose eighty percent of its land if the sea level is rise by half a metre . Therefore, one impact of climate change is sea level rise.
Another impact will be the spread of infectious insect-borne . Due to climate change, temperature and the frequency of rainfall increases too. This situation would then lead to insects such as mosquitoes to breed. Insect-borne diseases are transmitted from insects to humans or other animals. For example, heavy rainfall allows mosquitoes to grow and increase the chances of the spread of malaria and dengue fever. Symptoms of Malaria are high fever, chills and other flu-like symptoms while dengue causes fever, headaches and even severe bleeding. For instance, dengue fever was reported in the cool climate areas of Nepal and Bhutan for the first time in 2004. Therefore, spread of insect-borne diseases are another effects of climate change.
-Lastly, one last factor is more frequent extreme weather events. An extreme weather refers to a severe and rare weather phenomenon that results in significant economic losses and the loss of lives. An example of extreme weather will be heat wave. Although heat waves are neither visibly destructive nor violent, they are `silent killers' which can kill many people. For example,in August 2003, Europe experienced a heat wave which killed more than 70,000 people. In addition, when people are subject to extreme heat, their vital organs are at risk and death results when the body cannot cool itself down sufficiently. Therefore, one last factor is more frequent extreme weather event.
