At first glance, one can see that this is a staged image. The background is burry, the shadow is unrealistic outside, the lighting does not match the light outside the window and mostly focused on the soldiers. And this has led the viewer's attention to the main subject of the picture rather than other unnecessary objects. 
Regarding the main subject of the picture, one can feel the major atmosphere is quite comfortable, calm, happy, and friendly. Most of the soldiers are talking with each other and acting in a very manly manner: they are smoking, asking others for a lighter,  their hands are putting on other soldier shoulders...
However, one can also spot the man, who is placed in the middle of the picture, who looks very concerned and is not talking to anybody. And one can also spot that this is a reference to the famous drawing: " the last supper " and in there, one knows that there is something bad, unfortunate will happen afterward. Through these art, what caught my attention is that the working people are described as poor, struggling or at least tiring in trying to make money everyday and then their action and behavior are intense, rough, violence and so on. Their behavior in a nutshell. And an answer to this has definitely been addressed in class, which is the idea of habitus, of the economic situation. And then the idea of hegemony ,which was also discussed, tied extremely tight to what Edouard has said in the interview: " why do you said we are poor...", which link back to the Meritocracy. Without the context, one could interpret this as a black man, a funny-looking posture one, who is from the past and possibly not in the middle class due to the state of his cloth. 

However, in reality, this is a white man who is faking a black man with the purpose of making fun of the black people race. Moreover, the name Jim Crow also related and connected to a dark area in America where discrimination against black people and slavery were normalized. 

By making an illustration like this and especially when it is connected to a historical event, it sets the meaning and the interpretation of this event to a fixed one a narrows down the sight of the reader.

The collage of this section ( p96 - p99) shows the reality of the black history that the racists in America at that time choose to edit and ignore. It also represents the way that most Americans at that time do their racist act. 
The picture of  America that Americans choose to acknowledge is a land of freedom and a land of singular action of an exceptional individual. The myth being " it took one person to make a change ". Through this, it shows the mentality of being tone-deaf and choosing to neglect the dark and sad history that they create themselves for the black. While the bright part of the black history being the end of the Jim Crow period and the emancipation of slavery by Abraham Lincon, it can not be disconnected from the fallen soul in the American Revolutionary War, the charnel house in the Spanish Civil War, the genocide in the Second World War by the Nazi and so on. By neglecting these is just the same as saying "I'm not racist" while saying the n-word or saying that " we feel that we are unprejudice and undiscriminating " while demanding for a segregation from other race.

wants the existance of this unwanted being. I am happy,
but I am also scared, for my body is not own, my voice

appears to be an accidence to Mother. Adults are selfish,
they hear what they want, do what they want, be occupied 
only with their work and make us children a dumster for their 
anger or desire. We, Yuu and me, are just a tool for their 
satisfaction. If we are the tools for your plan and the 
nuisance for your optimization, then why would we even have 
emotion, why would the adult still put up a play and why not 
act with your true nature. And Mother, oh dear my Great Mother
why wont you listen to child when it is wriggling in senses of
danger and fear, the fear of assult. Is my body even yours anymore
or has it became or will it soon become someone else's?
Will you be even sorrow if body turns broken, if my heart 
turns ashes, if my lung can not handle the life supply anymore?
I think not, for the same reason you reject my seek for protection.
I once thought death is scary but if life is even more miserable
than death, grandfather I envy you. Forgive me for I am being a 
selfish and useless tool, I shell let the sweat and kind angles lie
under the plastic and alluminum wrap that you use at night to 
travel to dream land so I dont have to suffer anymore.

Yuu is lovely and a love of my life. However he is a naive tool. 
He fear the escape and accepts to be a tool for his Mother.

I'm a highschooler, who recently found out an amazing and relatable piece of literature of yours, 
from my point of view at least, called "Earthlings". I have consumed a lot of novel, which 
have the traditional family dynamic (a difference in power between the breadwinner and the rest of the 
family or the the parent and the child) as a problem. However, there has been none, that i am aware of, 
that touch upon this matter as deeply as yours in Earthlings. 

From that I wonder, those moments and feelings that you create in Earthlings, come from you personal experience? 
Does your family have that mindset of a traditional family? 

Although the first part of the novel, where the authorial decision that the mother made for Natsuki, would 
be a great example, what speaks to my current self the most is the interference of the parent from both 
Natsuki and Yuu side in the their relationship matter.

From that I wonder, what is your feeling / opinion on the extrem interference of the parent on the 
child life, similar to the novel? And if this has happened to your, would you mind sharing the effects
of it to your reception from small til adult of the constructed social concept? 

For Natsuki, I would argue that the the readers can sense that hopelessness from her and that she has almost 
come to "submit" her "body and rights" to the "Factory" under the heavy influence of parent and social 
life. And for me, through the "training" that I have received from small, it hurts me mentally and physically
to complettly go against the demands. Moreover, it has been making me confused on pin-pointing what is 
even my own identity, my wants or is it just someone else's wants. It stops me from questioning and fighting 
against it because the idea of: " I can not win ".

And finally, love. Because the concept of family bonding is so strong in this type of family, shown in the
novel, you love and have the right to love someone can not be only if you love the other but also if the
parent love that person and does that peron is beneficial to love. Natsuki is in question, whether she 
can stay with Yuu, only due to the fact that she does not done the "duty" that a couple must do in the 
society, from the parent perspective. Thus there is a potential that they can not be together. As for me
that idea of what a wife must be and the husband must be, that has been pushed on me by the parent, has 
confused me a lot and I wonder myself, do I even want to be a male in the relationship, I might be bisexual
I might be not. I just want to love and be loved, either male or female, without worrying about these "duties".
I am unsure about myself, but what I am sure is that as long as I am under the influence of the parent, 
I could never really find it.

Therefore, my last question: Would you mind sharing your opinions on love and has the view been effected by 
your parent and, or th social life, or has it complettly come from your own belief?
