The Shard

The Shard is the tallest building in London, this skyscraper is one of the top 10 tallest buildings in Europe at 1,017 feet (87 floors).

The project of this building was created long before its construction by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano, who is one of the founders of the high-tech style. The concept of the project is that The Shard is a «vertical city», which means that it is multifunctional complex where you can live, work and relax. During creating the project, Renzo was inspired by the masts of ships, of which there were so many on the Thames.

So, in 2009, construction of the most controversial skyscraper in London began on the place of the outdated Southwark Towers office building. Construction was repeatedly stopped, in consequence of difficult weather conditions and various excesses. Even at the beginning of the construction, there was a threat of project closing, since UNESCO included the Tower in the World Heritage List, and the high-rise, did not allegedly fit into the panorama of the city. But already in 2012, the opening of the tallest building in London took place.

Due to the design feature and the location of the facades, natural ventilation is possible in this building. Also, based on data from one source, 20% of metal structures are made from recycled materials.

From the inside, the “vertical city” consists of several blocks: an office, bars and restaurants, a hotel, private apartments and the highest observation deck in London.

For many years, the London skyscraper has been the most talked about building in the kingdom and in the world in general. One thing remains unchanged, despite its controversial architectural value, The Shard remains a popular landmark in the British capital.

First time when I arrived in London, I wondered about landmark which I need to visit here. In addition to commonplace sights such as Big Ben and Tower Bridge, I would like to visit places that locals prefer for their leisure time. I believe that if you choose these places you can quickly assimilate and better understand the mentality of these people. I decided to compose the top places that I should visit in the near future. I can clarify that most museums in the UK are free, which is good news. So, I'm ready to present the top places to visit:

1)Greenwich Park and Royal Observatory Greemwich

2)Hyde Park

3)The Tate Britain

4)Bank of England Museum

5)Canary Wharf

6)Sky garden
