The Chinese first started immigrating to the West Coast in the 1850s. By 1880 there were about 106,000 Chinese Americans in the Unites States. The Immigration Act of 1882 blocked Chinese immigration into the U.S. This increased their physical violence and they moved into small ghettos called Chinatowns. In 1949, Congress granted refugee status to 5,000 educated Chinese Americans. Today they get paid higher than the median income and their education is higher than most white Americans. Chinese language Mandarin is the second most popular foreign language in the U.S schools.

Filipinos are the second-largest Asian American group in the United States. The Tydings-Mcduffle Act of 1944 only allowed 50 Filipinos to immigrate to the United States. In 1965 that all changed and the amount of Filipinos increased significantly. The U.S military in Manila generated an educated elite who spoke English, studied the American school curriculum and moved to the United State with professional skills seeking to find a job.

In 1880, people from India came to trade and exchange goods in England. Indians from the west coast escaped British exploitation, they were forced to farm and instead of making food crops they had to make commercials. In California, the Punjabees colony were very successful growers & landowners however they were meant to lose their lands but the California Alien Land Law had their leasing rights under the ownership held by Indians and Japanese. In 1907, the city of Bellingham in Washington State the Indian laborers were attacked by racist mobs. It was legal and triggering other riots and expulsions throughout the entire Pacific region. In 1946, a law allowing Indian naturalization and immigration was passed before it was ruled by British Colonial to restrict Indian immigration to which they were supported by the U.S. government. In the past, tens of thousands of Indians arrived in the U.S. Lots of Indians are extremely well educated, professionals and their income levels are the highest of any group including other Asians in the United States.

By the early 1980s, global pressure for better humanitarian treatment of refugees forced the Vietnamese government to find solutions for the refugee crisis. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees established the Orderly Departure Program to resettle some 200,000 people who awaited their fate in refugee camps, and to reunite family members who had been separated. In addition, Congress passed the Amerasian Homecoming Act in 1987 to allow the persecuted children of American servicemen and Vietnamese women to immigrate to the United States.
