Activity Rules – Gender Stereotype Discussion

1.     Describe one gender stereotype you have observed. It can be from an advertisement, a TV show, daily life, or a common belief.

Example: One gender stereotype is that boys should play sports and girls should play with dolls.

Useful phrases:

-       One gender stereotype is that…

-       People think that…

-       It is common to see…

2.     Explain what it shows. What message or value does it express about gender?

Example: It shows that people think sports are only for boys and caring activities are for girls.

Useful phrases:

-       It shows that…

-       It means…

-       It sends the message that…

3.     Say if you think it is fair or not and give your reason.

Example: We think this is not fair because everyone can enjoy sports or taking care of others.

Useful phrases:

-       We think this is fair / not fair because…

-       In our opinion, this is… because…

-       We agree / don’t agree with this because…

4.     After listening to other groups, say what your group thinks.
Example: Our group thinks this stereotype is not fair because it limits what boys and girls can do.

Useful phrases:
