Author and Illustrator: Hans Christian Andersen and Jerry Pinkney
Publisher: C.A. Reitzel
Publication: November 11, 1843

Summary and Annotation:
The story of The Ugly Duckling is about the search for one's own identity. It inquires, "Where do I fit in?" One little duckling stands out rather than complying to what is considered normal. Belonging, isolation and togetherness, acceptance and kindness are all themes that should be explored in the book. It is also a story about the trials and tribulations of a young swan who was born from an egg in a duck's nest. When all of his problems began, he was labeled as unique. He was humiliated and abused in numerous ways, causing him to lose trust in himself.

Author and Illustrator: Sandra J. Howatt and Joyce Wan
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Year of Publication: May 6, 2014

Summary and Annotation:
SLEEP is a maker of makers. Birds sleep. Feet cling to a perch. Look at the balance. Let the legs loosen, the backbone untwist, the head go heavy. This bedtime read-aloud story is both lively and relaxing, making it the ideal prelude to a journey to dreamland. The sun has set, and sleepyheads everywhere are tucked into their warm beds. Duck is snuggled in the reeds, and Rabbit is snoozing in the weeds. Otter is rocking on a wave while Bear is nestled in his cave. But there is one sleepyhead who isn't in his bed. Where, oh where could he possibly be? This sweet, snuggly, and silly bedtime book with alluring illustrations will get little ones ready for a restful night's sleep.

Author and Illustrator: Faustin Charles and Michael Terry
Publisher: Bloomsbury Children's Books
Year of Publication: 1998

Summary and Annotation:
A large and angry crocodile lives deep in the forest. Every morning, he shouts to himself, 'Stay away from my river!' This is MY river! I'll eat you all if you come into my river! 'Unsurprisingly, all the animals keep a safe distance. That's exactly how the crocodile likes it. Until one morning, when the forest is filled with the groans of a distressed animal. The crocodile is suffering from toothache! Will any of the other animals help him after the way he's treated them? The large, beautiful illustrations are the ideal complement to this upbeat story about the dangers of selfishness and the importance of helping others. It is only when a brave little mouse steps out from the crowd and saves the day that the crocodile learns the value of friendship and realizes that life is so much better when lived with others.

Tanisha's classmate speculates on how to make her feel much better after spilling grape juice all over her new dress, as well as what it indicates to be kind. This moving and considerate story depicts what a child can do to show kindness and shows how every act, big or small, can have an impact or at least help a friend, from asking the new girl to play to sticking up for someone who is being bullied. "Kindness gives hope to those who believe they are alone in this world."

Author and Illustrator: Mercer Mayer

Publisher: HarperCollins
Children's Book Year of Publication: 2011

Summary and Annotation:
Little Critter is excited to spend the day assisting his father with household projects. But every task Little Critter attempts, from yard work to repairs, ends in disaster, and his cheerful "help" only adds to Dad's workload. Even when things don't go as planned, Little Critter learns that making an effort is all that matters. I believe the main message is that kids want to help but frequently end up making a big disaster until they get a little bigger and can help. Little Critter's heart is in the right place, and his father does come to appreciate all of his son's efforts to make their weekend day a success.

Author and Illustrator: Brothers Grimm and Adisebaba Animation
Publisher: Little Cozy Nook
Children's book Year of Publication: 2008

Summary and Annotation:
The story of the fisherman and his wife is a fairytale about a wife who asks her husband to do the unimaginable. He caught a magical fish, and she begged him not to kill her. He was generous and happy with her request, and she accorded him three wishes. Because the fisherman had no desires, he let her swim on. When he told his wife about what had happened, she expressed her desire for the fish to grant her wishes. The fisherman wasn't excited because he believed we shouldn't take advantage of other people's generosity. He was also content with his life and didn't want anything more, unlike his wife. The moral of the story is that greedy people will never be satisfied and will normalize their desire for something with expensive things. Those are the people who will take advantage of other people's kindness in order to satisfy their own selfish needs.

Author and Illustrator: Valeri Gorbachev
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Children's book year of Publication: 1959

Summary and Annotation:
Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a story about a young girl named Goldilocks who is looking for her place in the world. She happens upon the three bears' home one day. She tries three porridges (bowls of oatmeal), three chairs, and three beds before settling on one of each. Goldilocks might have been feeling something similar. She keeps looking for the right thing to eat, the right place to sit, and the right place to sleep after arriving at the three bears' house. The moral of the story is to respect others' privacy and property and to consider how your actions affect others. It is wrong for Goldilocks to enter another person's home and use their property.

Author and Illustrator: Brother Grimm's and Jim LaMarche
Publisher: ‎Chronicle Books; 6TH PRINTING edition
Children's book year of Publication: October 1, 2003

Summary and Annotation:
The story is simple and clear, a poor shoemaker and his wife discover they are receiving assistance from an unknown source. They discover that their helpers are little elves who are working long and hard hours to complete the production of shoes. Humans eventually give the elves the love of God through clothes because they help God. While it may appear strange, the fairy tale's underlying theme is not about God. This fairy tale is primarily about the anxiety that comes with being poor and the helplessness that comes with it. This story teaches us to be thankful and grateful, to work hard to make things better, to be grateful for all the help we have received from others, and to try to help others.

When she travels and nearly breaks some eggs at cooking class, she doesn't consider it a mistake because the eggs didn't break, but it's close enough to a mistake that she worries about making a proper mistake on her talent night. And sure enough, she does: in her balancing act, she accidentally uses pepper instead of salt, causing her hamster to sneeze and pop a water balloon, which lands on her. She's happy afterwards, but no one is impressed with her anymore. And, being completely perfect is overrated.
