Sac of fluid comes through an opening in the back, and is filled with damaged nerves and part of the spinal cord. Moderate to Severe disabilities.

Meningocele - Also comes through an opening in the baby's back, but the spinal cord is not in the sac, and there is either no or very little nerve damage.  Minor disabilities. This type is also very rare.

Spina Bifida Occulta - There is no sack on the back or opening, but there is a small gap in the spine. The spinal cord and nerves usually don't have any damage and are normal. There is research still being done. It's believed that the cause is a combination of genetic, nutritional and environmental factors. It does happen in the first few weeks of pregnancy, which is the time where the neural tube is being formed 
Although the cause for Spina Bifida isn't known, there are ways to prevent it. 

- Taking B-9/Folate/Folic acid supplements (deficiency in said vitamin can increase risk of neural tube defects which include Spina Bifida)
- Avoiding Valproic Acid (when possible)
- Talk to your doctor about medications that can affect the possibility of having a baby born with Spina Bifida
- If you have medical condition, make sure it is under control before getting pregnant. 
- Avoid overheating your body, such as hot tubs and saunas
- Treat your fevers quickly with Tylenol of store brand acetaminophen

One being fetal surgery during the pregnancy and the other being surgery on the baby right after birth (within 48 hours). If surgery is not done, there are many therapy options for someone with spina bifida to become as independent as possible. Some therapy options include physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Physiotherapy practices functional activities such as sitting, standing, walking, and stretching. These activities maintain or improve muscle strength and prevent leg muscles from further weakening. Occupational therapy helps with developing and improving ability to carry out everyday tasks and activities. They noticed the baby's spine looked a bit odd, and they then talked with a doctor about it. They weren't sure if he was going to live, but once they heard him cry after being born they had hope. The hospital they went to, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), has a special delivery unit which had an operating room in the close vicinity. The night he was born he was taken to the NICU, then the next morning he had his back closure surgery. It was successful. As far as they know, he is paralyzed from the waist down. It appears that he is in the process of treatment where he uses a walker and arm crutches.

Their first boy named Camden, was a healthy little boy who was only 1 1/2 years old. When they had their second kid named Collin, they planned to continue the delivery through a c section. When the doctors were delivering the baby, they realized something was wrong. Collin had a hole in his back, exposing his spine, which caused many threats to his survival rate. This dangerous condition was called Spina Bifida and it required surgery up to 48 hours after birth. Collin's spinal cord failed to close during fetal development. After the doctors realized something was wrong, they transferred him to UF health which was only 2 hours away from them. The doctors there operated on him and closed his spine back and attempted to place all previously exposed spinal nerves back in his body. While they were working on that, they discovered another issue which was that he had fluid backup in his brain. This was a chronic issue and he would have to live with it for the rest of his life. This was hard for the family because they were dealing with not just one issue but two. Collin's family was assisted by a social worker to set up meetings with a pediatric neurosurgeon. This was Lindsey's most difficult time in her life but she had much support from the social workers and doctors. A physician assistance once gave Lindsey this advice which was "Collin is a baby and he's going to have normal baby stuff. He's going to get colds. He's going to get sick. He's going to have fevers. He's going to teeth. He's going to be a baby first. He's just also going to have Spina Bifida.
