Ideas From Week 1's Padlet that Interest Me and Why:

Mainstreaming of Sex: I find it very interesting how sex in films have
become more accepted over the years from films such as Fifty Shades of Grey (released in 2015) to Netflix's newest erotica film '365 Days' which was released this year.
Sex has definitely become more accepted than it has ever been before, which could be linked in with modern feminism and the LGBTQ+ community - giving sex a new meaning altogether.

Sexuality and Commodification:
I also find it interesting how the objectification of women is used mostly to sell sex, wether that be sex toys, sex dolls, anything related to sex basically! It can be seen as empowerment or the complete opposite, which is an argument that I also find very interesting.

Coco de Mer

When I first opened Coco de Mer's website up I was shown an image of a woman named Julia Restoin Roitfeld, who after googling. is a French art director and model. If I were to view this website without the knowledge that it is in fact a sex shop I would've initially thought it to be bra shop, so the homepage itself doesn't show anything that could be viewed as 'challenging'. However, looking more closely at the website's sidebar you can see sections such as 'Bondage' and 'Toys', so it is very discrete. Personally, I think Coco de Mer's layout is very classy and feminine, so you can conclude that their demographic is directed towards more older women - which could also explain the website's need to be discrete.

The colours, in my opinion, are expensive and elegant, meaning this is most likely a luxury brand and therefore going to sell expensive products. There's no vulgar sex language displayed on the website either.

This shows me that Coco de Mer's idea of sex is expensive, luxurious and elegant.

In terms of how they view sexuality, Coco de Mer is very feminine, and quite clearly supports feminism and the idea of women being in charge of their own sexuality, which can be seen in the image below.

Excerpt from Striptease Culture by Brian McNair p.87

The emergence of porno-chic in 1990s popular culture reflected a broad public interest in the pornographic which it was in the economic interests of an increasingly commercialised and competitive media to satisfy. Porno-chic was (and continues to be) a further stage in the commodification of sex and the extension of sexual consumerism to a broader mass of the population than have previously had access to it. Unless one subscribes to the religious notion of sex as sacred, however, and the notion that commodification is by its nature ‘theft ‘it is not self-evident this is always and everywhere a bad thing.

Porno-chic has on occasion been tacky, often humorous, sometimes deeply serious. Some ‘serious’ explorations of pornography have been the cover for the straightforwardly competitive tactic of putting tits on television (rarely dicks). Others, to their credit, have presented to the public gaze opinions and sexualities rarely, if ever, granted visibility in mainstream culture before. Like the expansion of the pornosphere itself, porno-chic would not have happened in the absence of popular demand for access to and participation in sexual discourse. Porno-chic has been the occasion for important public debate around issues like censorship and sexual identity. From Koons to Madonna to Paul Thomas Anderson it has also inspired some art, popular and avant-garde of great originality and power. Porno- chic from that perspective, might be viewed as an index of the sexual maturation of contemporary capitalist societies, rather than a measure of their degeneration into sleaze. Blanket criticism of porno-chic as ‘barren titillation’ or sexploitation arises from the application of a set of elite aesthetic criteria for evaluation the public sphere which, as the popularity and ubiquity of porno-chic shows, are no longer shared (if they ever were) by audiences as a whole.
