Tissue typing is also known as human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing. HLA markers are found on the surface of cells. It is a group of procedures that determines what antigens are on an individuals cells and is usually done before organ transplants.
It is done to find matches between patients and donors. The better the matches are, the better chance that the organ is accepted by the recipient. If the antigens do not match well then the recipient's body is more likely to identify the organ as a foreign entity and attack it.

One basic test that can be used to test compatibility of cells is by mixing together the leukocytes from the donor and the recipient and seeing if an immune response occurs. A reaction from this means that it is likely that the recipient will reject the transplant.
