Do you like fish? I know I do, but soon I don't know if there will be any left to see. Our fish populations are decreasing more and more every day and it's time to fix it. The fish in our oceans are endangered and probably won't be around for much longer. I have never been snorkeling before but it is definitely on my bucket list to do, but by the time I'll be able to do that I don't know if there will be any fish left to see.

A significant problem in our oceans is overfishing. We are losing more and more fish every day and many issues are causing it. For example, this article states “ Shrimp, tuna, salmon, and cod are just some of the fish whose populations are at risk of collapsing.” (Plenty Of Fish In The Sea Maybe Not). This shows how multiple types of fish are at risk and that's not even all of them. Here is another example of how overfishing is a big problem, “ Shrimp, salmon, tuna, cod, and many more can become extinct in less than 30 years, over fishing is an emergency that can no longer be ignored.”(Plenty of fish in the sea maybe not). This proves that the fish in our oceans can become extinct very soon due to overfishing in our oceans.“Trawling drags huge nets through the ocean that scoop up every animal and the ecosystem in its pathway, resulting in massive wasteful bycatch – dead fish are returned to the sea because they weren’t the target fish.” (You can help stop overfishing). This shows that trawling drags huge nets into the ocean and entangles marine life and then they end up in the ocean again but they are dead. If the overfishing doesn't get stopped it can turn into something dangerous for everyone and can be very harmful to the animals.

To solve the problem of overfishing we have to use solutions that will change our oceans. For example, the article states, “We can choose to buy local. Seafood caught in local north American waters are generally subject to more scrutiny and better regulation than in other parts of the world, plus there is less energy used to store and transport the food.” This shows that if we start to buy local fish in North America we can start preventing overfishing in our oceans. In the article it states, “ Using catch shores makes seafood more valuable, meaning a higher, more predictable, profit for fishermen while protecting the environment.” This shows that if we make seafood more valuable with a higher profit we can protect the environment.

Senator Stabenow, I hope you love the fish just as much as I do. Overfishing is a huge problem in our oceans and there are a lot of problems causing it. It would be awesome if you could help us give the marine animals a better life to adapt to. I hope you understand where I am coming from, and that you would like to help marine life as well.

Sincerely,

Lilly Groat
