Name Game- Beginning of the Year Ice Breaker

Students will go around and say their name and something that describes themselves using the sound of the first letter of their name. Each student will take turns repeating what they have heard one after the other.
To take it a step further. Students will record in their interactive notebook each of their classmates names and the word that they learned about their classmates
As an extension of this activity, students will write a poem using the letters of their name and their descriptive word to write a poem about themselves.

One Up-Using paint sample cards to record important concepts.

There are many ways to use these paint sample cards to guide instruction. Here a few ideas:
-Record vocabulary words, definition, synonyms, antonyms in each section.
-Great for K-W-L charts
-Record benchmarks and sentence starters in each square.
These paint samples can be taped into the student's Interactive Notebooks or made into a group of card held together by a ring and used for group activities. (See photo Below)
