Heroin also comes in a form that resembles a black and sticky tar, hence the name Black Tar Heroin

There are several different ways to inject the highly addictive drug. One common way is intravenously or mainlining, which is straight into a vein. Heroin can also be injected subcutaneously or skin popping, meaning it’s injected right under the skin. Lastly heroin can be injected intramuscularly, which means it’s injected into the muscle rather than the vein.

Long term: insomnia, collapsed veins (if regularly injected), damaged tissue inside nose (is sniffed/snorted), infection in heart lining, swollen tissues filled with pus, constipation, stomach cramping, liver/kidney disease, lung complications, mental disorders (depression, antisocial personality disorder, etc.), sexual dysfunction (men), irregular menstrual cycles. Clog blood vessels leading to lungs, liver, kidney, or brain. HIV or Hepatitis C from sharing injection equipment. SIDS (if pregnant)

Well at least not in the United States. It used to be used for painkillers and is closely related to other opioids still prescribed today such as Oxycontin and Vicodin. In some other countries such as Canada and other European countries give free heroin to heroin addicts to reduce the crime rates. This is also in programs in the United States due to the high risk of HIV or Hepatitis C.

The first records of poppy use can be found in the ancient cultures of modern day Iraq and Iran. A document discovered in Thebes, an ancient, Egyptian city dated back to 1552 B.C. lists over 700 medical treatments in which opium was used. During the time period of the Middle Ages physicians experimented with opium to treat diarrhea and anxiety, they mixed it with alcohol and called it “tincture laudanum”, which is Latin for “to be praised”. It was then put into widely dispensed medicines. 1803 a German physicist created morphine, named after the Greek god Morpheus, god of dreams, who is depicted in artwork carrying a bouquet of opium poppies.
