This list shows all of the classic novels all high schoolers should at least look at before they graduate. This list is a canon, which means it shows all of the essentials of the criteria at hand. The criteria I used to make this list is local library availability, Amazon reviews, if it was on high school curriculum, if it was adapted to a movie or musical, the awards it won, pop-cultural references, number of books sold, and how many languages it has been translated into. You might disagree on what made the list, but this is a list of my essentials with my opinions and criteria.   This showed me how many different major awards the movie adaption to "Les Miserables" won.

6) "Uncle Tom's Cabin (TV Movie 1987)." IMDb, www.imdb.com/title/tt0094213/. Accessed 6 Mar. 2017.
   This webpage taught me how many movie adaptions there are for the book, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" 

7) "Why It Took So Long For ``The Great Gatsby'' to Be Considered A Literary Classic?" NewspaperAlum, www.newspaperalum.com/2013/05/why-it-took-so-long-for-the-great-gatsby-to-be-considered-a-literary-classic.html. Accessed 6 Mar. 2017.
  This cite informed me how many copies of "The Great Gatsby" where sold.

   This site showed me how many languages different books had been translated into.

From when it was published to now, Ray Bradbury's words always taught people a lesson that order isn't always an answer. "This book has sold over 10 million copies" -(Source 3), if that many people bought the book, then you know it is a must read. A fun fact about the title is that "the reason why it is 451 is because that is the temperature in which paper will catch fire without having to be exposed to an external flame" -(Source 9)

The theme of female empowerment brought many revolutions throughout history. This is a must read, as it also scored a 4.5 review on amazon books with over 8,000 reviews. If 8,000 people believe its a very good novel, then a high schooler should definitely read it.

"This fictional novel has been translated into 96 different languages." - (Source 8). Some languages are foreign to me. If a book can be read by 96 foreign speaking people, then you know it is important.

"This book has been translated 69 times, and actually has more variations in french." - (Source 8) This novel was turned into a movie which won many awards. "Some of the awards it won was best motion picture of the year with the oscars, and won a golden globe for  best performance by an actor in a motion picture." - (Source 5). It was also adapted into a hit broadway musical that won many Tonys. If so much has been done with this book, you know you, a high schooler or not, should read it.

Although this may hold true, that doesn't mean it isn't influential now, as it is a requirement in the high school curriculum. This novel also has many pop culture references, one of them comes from the musical Hamilton, "They think me Macbeth, and ambition is my folly I'm a polymath, a pain in the ass, a massive pain Madison is Banquo, Jefferson's Macduff and Birnam wood is congress on its way to Dunsinane." If it attracted the interest of a Broadway playwright, its excellence should be noted.

This novel is one of the oldest, written in the 1500's, yet still remains relevant today. This novel was first a screenplay, which was then recreated many times as a movie.

At the time of writing, slavery was still legal, and in full force. This book helped to change peoples minds about their opinions, and created a better view of the world. Written in the 1920's it opened the readers eyes to reality, and it still proves the point that a dream isn't always going to come true.
