Some days before Christmas time I went to Madrid to visit my family. There we spent a great time and we visit lots of places. At this time, we visited "El Prado" museum, it wasn't the first time. However, as my nephew had to practice English, we decided to do the tour with the English earphones. It was really curious to know details from very famous painters as Velazquez or Goya in English.

After spending all day long walking through Madrid streets we were exhausted so we decided to have a rest and go to the cinema to recover energy. However, we were so tired we didn't take into account that the cinema only reproduced Original Version films!!! So...we enjoyed watching Brad Pitt in English at the film "Allied" with Marion Cotillard.

A friend of mine belongs to a social net where people share their homes. It's a bit tricky to explain but in a few words it consists on you offer a room in your house to the people that belong to the net and you can have an accommodation in another member house when you travel abroad. Personally I consider it is a great way of saving at travelling, however, I think I couldn't do it.
Well, the point is that my friend sometimes calls me to help him to do sightseeing by Barcelona with his visitors. And that time, I take profit and practise my English. At the end of March, we spent the weekend with a group of three German family. It was nice and we visited Barcelona, once more time!

HOOKED ON BOOKS part 1

A walk to remember
by Nicholas Sparks
Ed. Gran Central
Publising 1999
PAGES 240

Time ago, some people recommended me a film called “A walk to remember” based on Nicholas Sparks’s book. I had already listened from the author due to his most famous book “The notebook”. Knowing there was the written publication I preferred to watch the film instead of reading it. I was shocked by it, I loved it at the first moment and it became one of my favourites films ever. However, as everybody knows, books as much better than films, so I had something pending. The last time I stayed in London I bought the book, but it hasn’t been until this year that I decided to read it and…. it has surprised me again. There are some differences with the film, for instance the period when the story happens, and there are more details, as the first meeting, friendships or parental relations. If you don’t like romantic books probably you won’t enjoy it, but I consider it is a well-written book with a heart-wrenching end.

SUMMARY

This novel is the love story of Landon and Jamie, who had the time of their life last year at high school. He was a popular boy consider as “bad boy”. She was the reverend’s daughter and an example of kindness and unselfishness. Landon needed to have a date for the homecoming dance and his last option was Jamie who couldn’t say no. After that moment they started to spend time together and Landon fell in love with her. She showed her a different path, the effort and generosity one. However, Jamie hid a secret, she was unfortunately ill, without any hope. They made the most of their time together. Jamie was Landon’s life-saver. He wanted to be a better person with prospects and finally he could achieve all his goals.

The Notebook
by Nicholas Sparks
Ed. Vision 1996
PAGES 239

SUMMARY
Noah is a strong-willed character who reads again and again a story to his wife Allie who suffers from Alzheimer. The story is in fact their love story. The reading contributes to Allie’s memory recovering.

The notebook’s summary:

Noah, a humble boy, and Allie, a socialite girl, met at summer holidays. They fell in love and spent a great summer. Unfortunately her parents didn’t accept the relationship and decided to leave the village hastily.

Noah wrote hundreds of letters to Allie, but her mum hid them. With no answer, he decided to stop writing and went to the war. At his back he couldn’t forget her and built their dreams’ house as a way to conclude the relationship.

On the other hand, Allie was about to marry a wealthy lawyer but she saw at the newspaper that their dreams’ house was on sale. She went to the summer village, met Noah and asked why he built that house instead of writing to her. When Allie and Noah talked they could understand what had happened.

This is a story of love so enduring and deep it can turn tragedy into triumph, and have the power to create a miracle.

I have also attended to both literature workshops the EOI has organized.
Firstly, we read an Agata Christie's story, . It was a little heavy-going because in some aspects it was unlikely. Nevertheless we learnt a lot of vocabulary and spent a great time discussing about it.
The second was a short story based on an investigation. It was poorly written and very easy-to-read. However at the meeting we could invent a new plot for the story and it was funny.
I have to say that I really enjoyed both meetings.
