Usrah Week 2 : HADITH JIBRIL AND ADAB IN SEEKING KNOWLEDGE

One day, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sitting with his companions when a man, unknown to anyone (with clean clothes), came and sat in front of the Prophet, placing his knees against the Prophet's and his hands on the Prophet's thighs. He asked, "O Muhammad, tell me about Islam," and proceeded to recite the pillars of Islam. The man then asked about Iman, and again answered it correctly, followed by questions about Ihsan, and the Day of Judgment. The Prophet responded that the one asking knew no more than the one questioned. Afterward, the Prophet told Umar that the man was actually the angel Jibril (Gabriel), who had come to teach about Islam, Iman, Ihsan, and the signs of the Day of Judgment.

The angel appeared as a human (a man) to show how one should present oneself when in the presence of knowledgeable individuals.

Islam: What we do and say.

Iman: Relates to the heart and internal belief.

Why is the Hadith of Jibril important?

It emphasizes that actions must reflect our love for Allah, not just words.

Acts like prayer and other obligations from the pillars of Iman prevent wrongdoing, hence the importance of praying on time and performing voluntary prayers.

It teaches humility before Allah, encouraging us to be humble and see ourselves as small, even if others elevate us.

Connection with seeking knowledge:

Jibril did not declare himself as an angel when asking questions.

He sat respectfully in front of the Prophet, demonstrating politeness.

We should arrive early and avoid chatting during lessons.

Teachers hold a high status, and their blessings are crucial.

When asked a question, we should try to answer or seek help from those more knowledgeable, as the question might be a way for us to learn more.

Women in the Prophet’s time were not shy to ask questions, even when it made the Prophet himself blush.

In learning, we must set aside pride and shame.

We should not be embarrassed to say "I don’t know," avoiding false answers. Even great scholars like Imam Malik once answered only two out of more than 40 questions, without hesitation to say "I don’t know."

Trust in Allah (Tawhid): This is the belief in the oneness of God. Muslims believe that Allah is the one true God, who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and merciful. Trusting in Allah means relying on His wisdom and guidance, acknowledging His authority, and submitting to His will in all aspects of life.

Trust in Angels (Mala'ika): Muslims believe in the existence of angels, who are created by Allah to carry out specific tasks. They are messengers of God, like Angel Jibril (Gabriel), who conveyed the revelations to the prophets, including Prophet Muhammad. Trust in angels involves accepting their role in delivering God’s messages and performing tasks according to His commands.

Trust in the Qur'an: Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the final and complete revelation from Allah, delivered to humanity through the Prophet Muhammad. Trusting in the Qur'an means accepting it as the ultimate guide for life, following its teachings, and seeing it as a source of divine wisdom and moral guidance.

These beliefs, part of Iman, reflect a Muslim's faith in the unseen realities and form the foundation of their spiritual and moral outlook.

Pillars of Iman

Trust in Prophets (Anbiya'): Muslims believe in all the prophets sent by Allah to guide humanity, starting from Adam to the final prophet, Muhammad. They were chosen to deliver Allah's message and set an example for how to live a righteous life. Trusting in the prophets means believing in their role as truthful messengers of God and following the guidance they conveyed.

Trust in the Hereafter (Akhirah): This refers to belief in life after death, where all individuals will be resurrected and judged by Allah based on their deeds. The Hereafter includes concepts of Heaven (Jannah) and Hell (Jahannam). Trust in the Hereafter means preparing for eternal life by living according to Allah’s commands and understanding that this world is temporary.

Trust in Qada' and Qadar (Divine Decree): This is the belief in destiny and that everything happens according to Allah’s will. Qada' refers to Allah’s eternal decree, while Qadar refers to the actual occurrence of events. Trusting in Qada' and Qadar means accepting that both good and bad things are part of Allah’s plan, and relying on His wisdom, even when outcomes are beyond human understanding.

These beliefs shape a Muslim’s view of life, guiding their actions, morality, and how they cope with life’s challenges and uncertainties.
