The advice for children aged 0-18years, and references for evidence are sourced from Delivering Better Oral Health. An evidence-based toolkit for prevention. (OHID, DHSC, NHSE & NHSI  Ed4, 2021).

Pls share widely as needed and for professionals delivering programmes with children and young people, please incorporate the key messages and interventions for good oral health and Make Every Contact Count.  

There are 3 key messages for good oral health:  Toothbrushing, being “sugar-smart” and visiting the dentist:  

1. Toothbrushing & toothpaste

• Brush teeth at least twice a day, last thing at night or before bedtime, and on least one other occasion.  

• Use toothpaste containing at least: 1,000ppm fluoride (0-6 year olds) or 1,350-1,500ppm fluoride (7+year olds).

• Use a smear of toothpaste (0-2year olds) or a pea-sized amount of toothpaste (3+year olds).

• Parents and carers should assist toothbrushing for 0-6year olds, and assist if required for 7+year olds.

• Spit out after brushing – do not rinse.

The core mission of Prevent is stopping people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The early intervention support provided by Prevent addresses the personal, ideological, and social factors which make people more susceptible to radicalisation.

It’s for these reasons The Children’s Hospital Charity funded a project with CAMHS in Sheffield, to develop a website to help young people help their friends they think may have mental health problems. On 8th July the Local Authority Fostering South East launched, as a new virtual fostering hub bringing together the expertise of 20 councils from across the region. The new hub will ensure prospective foster carers have access to a centralised platform for their initial enquiries about fostering and will see local authorities work collaboratively to provide the best support, right from the start of a carer’s fostering journey.  More details on the new regional website

ADHD and Autism (Neurodiversity) | Children Young People and Families Online Resource

In line with discussions at the Early Help Strategic Group and the Early Help Champions Group we are pleased to share that the Early Help Delegation portal has gone live, as per our Early Help Strategy. This will enable the Targeted Early Help service (TEH) to agree a Lead Practitioner (LP) from a partner agency to continue to support the child and family after TEH has ended their support.  The LP will be agreed at the final Team Around the Child meeting that will be chaired by TEH and in conjunction with and consent from the family and agreement with the partner agencies.

The Early Help Delegation Portal is a digital platform which allows our TEH service to collaborate and seek contributions from a diverse range of partner LPs when supporting children, young people and families. This portal facilitates collaboration between agencies by allowing information sharing and reporting of outcomes.

The new portal system will enable us to collectively understand the needs of children and families in Slough through streamlined recording systems and data collection, to better understand the wealth of early help activity undertaken by partners and services which will inform our Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, our Early Help Strategy, service delivery, commissioning and targeting resources to need.

The portal will be made available to professionals in sectors such as Education, Health, Children's Centres, Early Years and the Voluntary sector. It will help us to capture and identify the number of children, who have been supported through partnership Early Help once TEH Intervention is completed and report on the progress made and outcomes achieved.

The delegation portal will enable the Families First Form to be sent out to partner agencies to capture how children and families have been supported, the type of support provided, the progress made, views of children, young people and their families and the feedback received by identifying a LP who will continue to support the child(ren) and family and coordinate the required services.

Individuals can complete a profile by answering a simple 10–15-minute questionnaire.

Once the profile is complete, they will be able to see the available support they may be eligible for in one place, get updated when more support is added, and apply for multiple sources of support directly through the portal.

This can include targeted help with energy bills, home improvements to boost energy efficiency, warm clothing, and essential winter supplies.

The council is training some of its housing officers on the system, so they can use it for their clients, or direct them to try the portal themselves.

Councillor Paul Kelly, lead member for housing, highways, planning and transport, said: “It is fantastic to have such a portal where residents can find out about a variety of support and only need to make one profile to be able to start applying.

Pregnancy in Mind is a preventative mental health service designed to support parents-to-be who are at risk of, or currently, experiencing, mild to moderate anxiety or depression during their pregnancy. It is a group work service, delivered online, where expecting parents can come together and build relationships, knowledge and skills that help them manage any difficulties they are experiencing. The ultimate objective of this service is to build parents’ capacity to provide sensitive, responsive care to their babies – and help parents keep these new skills up postnatally and as their children develop. Slough Family Information Service is looking for some new parent champion volunteers, to join their existing team, who might have a few hours spare each week to talk to other parents about local family services.

You can do this aligned to their own routine of being a parent, and attend some groups at Children centres, libraries or stay and play groups.

2-day induction training will be provided and some training sessions will be available to help you in your role.

All women expecting their first baby and within 30-36 weeks pregnant are welcome. Booking is essential via your midwife.

Pregnancy is marked by significant hormonal, physical, emotional, and social shift. These factors can increase vulnerability to mental health difficulties. Health and social care practitioners play an important role in supporting the mental and wellbeing of mothers and their children. 

We recently heard from researchers, practitioners and mothers with experience of pre-birth assessment about how involvement with children’s social care during pregnancy can further traumatise and exacerbate existing mental health challenges. Working collaboratively with parents can reduce the likelihood of care proceedings and minimise trauma. Explore new videos that share examples of good practice from the recent Research in Practice Partnership Conference on pre and post-birth work.

Building on the Research in Practice Pre-birth Change Project, the conference brought together academics, practitioners, and leaders to explore innovative approaches to policy and practice. Research in Practice members can access these resources designed to support practitioners in health and social care, and midwifery. 

A new blog using Case Law and Legal Summaries also outlines a judgement on kinship care. It explores how effective pre-birth support and the use of genograms can support trauma-informed, family-centred practice. 

The aim of the New Maudsley Approach is to lower anxiety and distress in family members and to give carers communication tools, skills and techniques that help them engage their loved one to improve their self-esteem and develop the resilience to embark on change.

The Best Start Family Hubs and Community Detached Youth Work team are planning a series of FUN, FREE, "Party in the Park" sessions over the summer holidays for families in Slough. The dates and times are below.
