I have found in my classroom that students are less likely to respond to questions (especially math) due to fear of being wrong and being made fun of if they get the answer wrong. There is also an issue with some kids saying "oh this is so easy" and then that puts it in other student's minds that since the other kid thinks it is easy, then they would be stupid for asking a question or saying they don't understand. I have a rule in my class that they are not allowed to say "this is so easy" or "I'm bored, I learned this last year"; I tell them just because you are good at math, doesn't mean the person next to you is. They may do well in history or english, where you might not do as well in those subjects. I can see where virtual learning is easier for those students afraid of bullying in general, but I teach 6th grade math, and they have a hard time doing any type of online learning. I think at a high school level, doing virtual school would be a great option if you are being bullied. They mentioned how the virtual learning setting has been somewhat of a respite for their students. 
I agree that our students have more demands on their plates than we know. 
Inner-city, low-income students come with baggage from home that can rarely be seen unless we are attentive to their needs and truly listen. They have family disputes, broken homes, and minimal supplies to meet their needs. Many of my seniors and juniors work jobs most days of the week to help pay rent and bills for their family. School work is the last thing on their minds. 
However, I disagree with the fact that many students are thriving in the "quarantine setting".
