         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1785 the Confederation Congress passed an ordinance that  set up a process to survey and sell the lands north of the Ohio river. This law caused the land to divide into townships. The Treaty of Paris gave up control of the land north of the Ohio river and west of the Appalachian mts. in 1783.</div>]]></description>
