With the rapid growing number of female librarians, ALA elected their first female president, Theresa Elmendorf, in 1911. In highly populated areas library jobs became very competitive. Some librarians in remote places struggled because library were seen more as a meeting place rather than an educational resource. While other librarians worked to create programs for children that might attract parents and bring educational material into the workplace. Librarians began to get working volunteers who helped with providing services to more people.

In 2011, the ALA began the Privacy Revolution program focusing on issues of privacy in the digital age. It is an extension of concerns related to the PATRIOT Act as well as other privacy concerns. Library funding went down despite people supporting the importance of it. Libraries are also offering new recreation, new initiatives and content creation opportunities.

Librarian Media Specialists believe all of these indicators are important but hard to accomplish. They focus on the one that is most important to them. Finding information has always been of most importance and continues to be. Community members, principals and teachers can have a different perception of the role and importance of the librarian, not thinking the library helps promote a well rounded curriculum or increase in learning. They think kids only check out books. All stakeholders need to explained the true role of the LMS.

In my district, LMS are perceived as leaders in the schools and as technology specialist and their leadership skills are of great importance. Some libraries are moving towards flexible schedules that allows for LMS to be in more of an instructional consultant role. LMS are using procedures to help students access information beyond their own library and align learning with CCSS. Libraries are shifting to library commons(physical and virtual spaces) where LMS are collaborating with teachers and other specialists, students, and the community. The library is seen as the heart of learning and common gathering place where small groups, large groups, content creation, research, and a wide variety of other learning are happening simultaneously. Information literacy continues to be the foundation and reforming at the same time.
