Just went hiking here last weekend with my classmates! Located about 130km from Paramaribo, it's perfect for spotting wildlife like monkeys and tropical birds. The view of Brokopondo Lake from the plateau is absolutely stunning, especially at sunrise.

Fort Zeelandia & Independence Square

This is where I often come to study! The historical fort now houses our Suriname Museum. Pro tip: Visit on Sunday when local artists display their work around Independence Square. The mix of colonial architecture and our vibrant culture is amazing!

Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral

The largest wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere! Being Catholic myself, I attend mass here sometimes. Even if you're not religious, the architecture is breathtaking. It's right in the heart of Paramaribo.

Central Market Vibes 🍲

This is where I grab lunch between classes! You MUST try our local dishes here - my favorites are pom (a traditional Surinamese dish) and roti. The market is super colorful and the vendors are always friendly. Best time to visit is early morning!

Waterkant Street Life

My favorite hangout spot with friends! The historic waterfront is lined with amazing street food vendors. Come at sunset for the best views of the Suriname River. We often get our homework done here while enjoying some fresh coconut water! 🥥

From my experience living here, the best time to visit is during our dry seasons (February-April or August-November). The weather is perfect for outdoor activities and exploring. Avoid December-January when it rains a lot - trust me, I bike to university in this weather! 🚲

Getting Around

As a student, I mostly use public transportation. The small buses called 'buses' are cheap and go everywhere in Paramaribo. For trips to nature areas, you'll need to book a tour. I recommend my favorite local tour company that offers student discounts!
