In Erikson's first stage of development, trust versus mistrust, the basic needs of an infant; 0-18 months; are met and they will develop a sense of hope that they are provided with the nourishment needed to survive. An infant can not do most things for themselves causing them to always rely on others, and when their needs are met they have a sense of hope.

An example of this is an infant learning the voice and touch of a loved one. They gain assurance in the familiarities that lead to the full development of trust. On the other hand, when handed over to a stranger or someone less known an infant may cry out and be very skeptical of the unknown which causes mistrust. The textbook states that this feeling would be predominated when an infant receives the gratification of knowing their needs are in the right hands.

Erikson's second stage; autonomy versus shame and doubt, works on developing the knowledge that a child is their own person. From ages 1 - 3 they will learn to make their own decisions and feel emotions when punished as they gain an understanding of shame.

An example of this would be a child returning to action after being reprimanded not to such as receiving a cookie from a cookie jar. They make get scolded with a smack on the hand and the child will begin to get upset and maybe cry in response to the shame of getting in trouble. In my life, I have done so and felt the feeling of shame which stated in the textbook shame creates the self awareness and awakens the feelings to do better next time.

In Erikson's third stage; initiative versus guilt, children begin to create self control and develop a self conscious when performing right or wrong actions. From ages 3 to 6, they know how shame feels now they move into the feeling of guilt which leads to having a strive for purpose and doing the right things.

As a child, arguing with a sibling never ended up well and the feleing of guilt would build up when saying the wring things toward one another. Growing up in this age we want a purposeful relationship and build towards getting along to prevent the awful feeling when you know you are in the wring.

In the fourth stage industry versus inferiority, the middle childhood ages 7 through 11 will start to have a high self confidence and gain satisfaction and contentment. They will be aware when they succeed but also feel defeated whenever they do not fulfill personal goals. They will have a harder time defeating the negativity that comes with the loss but will soar when they feel pleased with themselves.

An example of this in my life would be gaining the strive to always be the first one to have a Bible verse memorized in class. It created a great sense of satisfaction and as the book states the feeling of complete. However, when I would fail do to so the loss took over and it was harder to come back to it.

In the stage of identity versus confusion people in late childhood, 12 through 18 learn their roles in life and find their identity. As derived from the textbook, they learn to find their place and who they are meant to be. Through the confusion of not knowing which group to belong to, who or where they want to be in life they go through the struggles that will point them for the future.

An example of this would be in my life, finding the right crowd to be associated with and gaining a sense of purpose within my high school. There are always conflicting ways in who to surround yourself with and it takes time but I found worth in knowing that I fit in with my academically inclined group. I also lead myself with those with similar beliefs.

In Erikson's sixth stage, intimacy versus isolation, the now adults, 19 through 29 are creating close relationships with one another as they are approaching the times of marriage and the beginnings of new families. They develop close bonds that set them up for their future which will continue to expand. During this stage the textbook mentions, they will develop healthy relationships and find someone to spend the rest of their life with.

An example of this is a female who may not have attended a certain church before now decides to go where she meets a male she grows very fond of. During this time they build a bond by going on dates and will grow to one day marry one another and eventually have a family of their own. However, if this fails they may go back to seeking on themselves and form a wall of isolation as it would be hard to think you could find someone else.

During this stage of generativity versus stagnation, adults will tend to their families and continue to work and provide for societal needs. From ages 30 to 64 will act as active members in shaping the lives of those around them. They will form a strong foundation that will help them to stay financially ahead. During this time, they may be a start to a service that will aid future generations.

An example of this would be an adult creating a fundraiser or program that aids children in elementary schools to be able to have access to books or educational tools outside of school. They may not have had a string impact in society so they strived to provide resources that will be beneficial for years to come.

In the final stage, ages 65 and above integrity versus despair will overcome individuals as they have the full circle to life. They will have gained all the knowledge they can and have gathered a sense and meaning to life. They will be happy as to have lived a life fulfilled with many activities and to be able to remember all the good things that have came out of it.

An example of this, would be my grandmother who has lived her life to the fullest making sure everyone was always cared for and now as she is fighting dementia we can continue to share the memories we have made. She has fulfilled her journey with us and taught many lessons and we overcome the negativity with the joy of all the times we have left together.
