Naegleria fowleri is a thermophilic amoeba that lives in freshwater environments. The amoeba can also be found in pools or other water sources with low management. Naegleria fowleri is the only species of Naegleria to infect people and animals. Naegleria usually grows best in water temperatures up to 115 degrees fahrenheit and can survive for short periods of time in higher temperatures. Infections are generally rare in the United States. Another name for the amoeba is brain-eating bacteria and it is acquired by having contaminated water enter the nasal passage. Swimming in freshwater or in poorly managed pools are the most common ways of transmission. Running your face under a tap that happens to contain some of the bacteria is also a way of becoming infected with the brain-eating amoeba. Brain-eating amoeba is not limited to the type of person it infects. Naegleria fowleri is the main cause of primary amebic meningoencephalitis which leads to the rapid degeneration of brain tissues. The symptoms of the infection begin approximately five days after being infected and include fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. As the infection continues to damage the brain, more symptoms such as seizures, hallucinations, and confusion can develop. Soon after the symptoms develop, death usually occurs due to the infection causing swelling of the brain. Truthfully, there is no known way to fully prevent infection because the amoeba is naturally part of the environment and millions of people become exposed to it yearly with very few infections. For pools and faucets, proper sanitation and management can lower the chance of becoming infected by the amoeba because chemicals, such as chlorine, disinfect the water source. Treatment of the infection is fairly recent with Miltefosine, a drug for breast cancer treatments, has been used in addition to other drugs to fight off the infection. Amphotericin B is another effective drug to treat the infection, however because the rate of infection to death is rapid, acknowledging the possible infection is crucial to feasibly surviving the usually fatal infection.
