black women pushing to make herself heard

A black women is at a poetry slam and is talking about all that her people go through on a day to day basis. She displays the hurt not only through her words but also through her voice. although she is trying to get the point across to the audience, it sounds like she is forcing it to much. The women is saying all of the things that she would normally go through before she got to the point where she could say what she needs to say with confidence and the way she wants to say it. The person she is describing that would be struggling through all of the thoughts is much like Janie in that she is a black women that deals with all of the struggles. Much like when Janie had to wear a head rag because Jody is "superior" to her.

Black Klansman

A Black man, Daryl Davis Tells his story of how he got to talk to a higher up in the klan and eventually attending kkk rallies. The man did not understand why people who didn't know him, his past, or anything about him would instantly hate him because of his skin color. His encounter with the klansman was rather civilized and there was no bickering but the man did make it clear that he was superior to Mr. Davis. At a point in the conversation there was a noise that both men thought was the other and they stood up quickly and stared at each other intensely thinking each other had made the noise until Mr. Davis's secretary pointed out that it was just the ice and that showed the ignorance of both men and with that comes fear. If they were not ignorant that would not have happened. The point of his message is to learn about what the other side see's and not to understand it before you have feelings toward it. This translates to more then just the color barrier but also anything that you could feel tension between. This is really a teaching situation and everyone can take advantage of this.

A free bird drifts on the winds and thinks of yummy worms. The free bird does with his life what he wants. While the free bird lives life to the fullest there is a caged bird looking through its bars with clipped wings and tied feet. The free bird resembles the white man and how he has not a care in the world but the black person is in a cage scared to open their mouth because if they do they could be severely punished.

Clint Smith talks of his childhood and not talking about how he felt and talking more about his feelings and thoughts but more emphases on his parents and how they felt having to constrict his ability to play the same games as his friends and how they had to strip away part of his childhood just to keep him safe and not be mistaken shooting a actual gun when he is actually just playing with water guns with his friends in the dark hiding behind cars which in his dads eyes and which was sadly true were dangerous activities not for his white friends or anyone else but for him because he could be "mistaken" for someone attempting to hurt them whether the accuser wanted to kill a black kid or not.

Racism in Maine

In America Hate crime is on a rise as a whole but because Maine is 94.7% causation minorities are more of a minority so if hate crimes gets out of hand it may be very hard to counteract. There are three known hate groups in Maine, the Maine Resistance, hammerskins (Crew 38), and of course the KKK. All of these groups are "just" talking and saying their opinion and because of the first amendment the government cant do any thing about it. Director Robert Trestan says that even though the government the comunity has to speak out aginst the hate because if nothing is done when it is in low stages of the hate crimes it can escalate into harrasment and threatening and even strait up violence and then the government can intervene but we dont want it to get there is it doesnt have to. This is an example that our society hasnt gone to far forward but its still better then what was happening in the days of TEWWG.
