CRMS Department Leader Construction Brainstorming by Ryan Green

Hello CRMS Department Leaders:

As you heard at our last department meeting, Greg Cole has asked us to put together a needs list by department so that he can start putting together a plan for upcoming CRMS construction. This is just the start of this process.

Ryan Green has created this Padlet to organize this information. Please do not make this a wish list, but make sure you communicate thoughtful considerations put forward by your department. These ideas are going to considered by Greg Cole and he is going to start working through the slow process of meeting the needs we put forward.

Some departments may have very few needs in terms of space. Other departments like science and special education have a shortage of lab space and appropriate classroom spaces with growing and evolving programs.

If you need any outside perspective, please invite Mark Dahl or Tom Shaw to your meeting and we can help you create a space needs list for your departments.

When differentiating instruction, we often need more space to spread kids out. Sometimes they need to be in small groups collaborating, sometimes they need to be part of a mini lesson with the teacher, and sometimes they need to work independently. Since classrooms and class sizes don't allow for proper space for these activities, we need space to send kids to work outside of the classroom. We need to be able to send small groups or individual students to an area where they can work and be productive with proper seating and desk space. Additionally, sometimes we need to get our students up and moving and the weather does not cooperate in allowing us outside. It would be helpful to have a large space to use for these gatherings. Gyms are difficult to "check out" and often change by the hour.

Could one of the HVAC closets be moved to the ceiling to regain that essential storage need in room 118/120?

We lost a room for PLTW teaching and now need to share spaces in tech ed rooms and its becoming more difficult to do so given all of their consumables in PLTW is equal to the space needed for tech ed. Storage space is needed for PLTW and Tech Ed now since both subjects (5 preps) are being taught out of 3 rooms.

Why? We need room for students to work in groups and build their projects. Using the hallway is not productive and causes discipline issues. In addition, we are asked to keep our projects in our classroom and have lost the ability to do projects or large group activities in the basement. Storage of projects is problematic. With multiple projects from multiple subjects it can be hard to secure student work. Also, ideally life science classes would have windows to capture daylight for growing plants and observing the natural world.

Why? We need proper level science workstations/lab tables/desks - science equipment needs to be level and safely set up so that experiments/investigations can run and projects laid out. We need electrical upgrades - not all outlets work, many circuit breakers trip with just one item plugged in. We need plumbing upgrades - pipes are corroded/blocked and fixtures leak/break. We need cabinet upgrades - veneer is peeling (creating sharp/dangerous areas to students and staff), latches are not working leaving doors ajar (creating areas where students and staff can bump into and get hurt), and locks are not working - we do not have keys to the locks to properly secure materials. Cabinets are covered with 60+ years of graffiti that needs to be covered/replaced.

The number of students with special education needs continues to grow. With the change of boundaries, 6 teachers were added and this year another 1.5 teachers will be added. We are more than filled to capacity in the SPED area. With new construction or rearrangement of classes, it would be good to integrate rooms that could be used for 12-15 students. This would reduce the stigma for students of walking into the "special ed" area. If SPED classes could be dispersed throughout the building, there could be break spaces aligned so students don't have to walk across the building to take a break. We need small spaces for testing, working with small groups, meetings, etc. We need a few larger meeting spaces for 12-15 people.

DCD centerbased classrooms: with the directive to incorporate Structured Teaching (individual work stations for each student, areas for choice time and living skills) classrooms are outdated. Appliances in the kitchen and bathroom are old. Often students in these classes rooms have big equipment (motor wheelchairs, standers, gait trainers) nurses or paras that take up a lot of space. This year, there will be 16 students (2 with big equipment) 2 nurses, 6 paras, 2 teachers and occasional itinerant staff between 2 rooms. It will be crowded.

The conversation at the district level has been schools keeping their own kids. CRMS already has an EBD setting 3 program and DCD classrooms. At some point in time, there could be a LAUNCH program. This is something to consider/check out.
