Polar started as J.G. Bieberbach company in 1882 by J.G . Bieberbach, a German immigrant living in New York City. The company bottled seltzers and ginger ale but focused on alcohol. However, the American Prohibition on alcohol forced the company to shift their focus to seltzer. They continued to focus on selling seltzer even after the prohibition laws were repealed. Due to manufacturing advances, Polar switched from glass bottles to plastic bottles in the late 60's due to advances in manufacturing. Polar is currently the largest independently owned seltzer distributor in the northern United States and is located in Worcester, Massachusetts. It has bought several companies over the years, including Adirondack Beverages, 7Up, A&W, Sunkist, Seagrams, Royal Crown and Diet Rite.
