Some lines and passages standout and we remember them because they inspire us or help us to understand what we are reading in unique ways.
I want you to complete this Padlet by uploading two "Golden Lines" that you have found in Dweck's essay. Also, briefly tell us what made those lines special.
Finally, Respond to at least two of your peers' "Golden Lines."

The first one that stuck out to me the most was, "why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow". I really liked this line because it was something similar to what my daughter always says when it comes to the company you surround yourself with. The second line i liked was, "Not only weren't they discouraged by failure, they didn't even think they were failing. They thought they were learning". This was interesting because it showed these kids weren't afraid to fail, they saw everything as a learning opportunity and that's something we all should all be doing.

I would chose the line "..it's not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest." As my first golden line. I really liked this quote because I feel it represents my educational journey. I struggle with some really bad dyslexia and received straight Fs in high school, and that is no exaggeration, but here I am now a strong A student, doing the exact opposite of what everyone thought I would do!
My second golden line would have to be "The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it's not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset." One of my favorite words is passion, it is such a strong and meaningful word too me, passion is what drives me to do better and to pick up all the pieces when I fall. I think this line was beautifully worded.

The first line that I chose is "why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better?" This line really stood out to me because I could relate to it. I always want to prove myself at being good at things to show people that I'm not a good for nothing, instead of what I could be getting better at. The second golden line that I chose was "why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow." This line stood out to me because I would always look for validation on the work that I did from friends or partners. And now I have a partner who challenges me to grow and knows that I can do better.

One line that I really thought is was powerful was, "Not only weren't they discouraged by failure, they didn't even think they were failing. They thought they were learning."(p.1) I think this is an important line because a lot of the times when I don't do well in something I tend to get discouraged and want to not try again. this line reminds me that instead of looking at a loss like a failure to see it as a learning opportunity. Another line that stood out to me was, "Everyone can change and grow through application and experience". (p.3) Again I think this line is important because we should not expect ourselves to be good at something in the first try. We will get better with experience and practice.

This really hit me just because I know that feeling all to well. My world went up side down and I didn't wanna do anything nor did I want help. Everyone was pushing me to get help and I kept saying oh I will, I will but never did until it just to the where I had too. The other line that I chose was " why look for friends or partners who will just shore up self esteeming stead of ones who will also challenge you to grow." I had a partner who would bring me down and make me feel bad for the way I felt so when I decided to leave. I have family and 2 amazing bestfriends who help me to success in life and I'm thankful for them.

The first line I chose was, "Although people may differ in every which way... everyone can change and grow through application and experience." In the past, I ran away from my problems, and my fear of failure prevented me from challenging myself. This line reminded me every little thing we do affects our mindset, and we can continue to change and grow every day.
The second line that stood out to me was, “The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it's not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset.” Successful people seem to be in a continuous state of self-improvement, so it would be fair to say they adopted a growth mindset. I chose this line because although it is hard to embrace failure, it is important to remember it will help everyone on their road to success.

This line also stood out to me because there is lots of truth in it.

The first line I have chosen is "Its not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest". This really spoke to me because when you see someone successful and smart you don't see the struggle and hardships it took them to get there. It really is a growing process. My second line I have chosen is "The view that you adopt for yourself profoundly effects the way you lead your life". Your mind is powerful and it will believe what ever you want it to. Like Dweck stated, if we put yourself down when things go wrong for you your mind will start to believe those things and it will stick with you.

1. "It's not some fixed prior ability, but purposeful engagement...it's not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest." (pg. 3) I chose this as a golden line because I believe that people can choose to be smart. Although everyone is born with their own strengths and weaknesses, it's the people who can go out of their comfort zone and have ambition that improve the most.
2. "Not only weren't they discouraged by failure, they didn't even think they were failing. They thought they were learning." (pg. 1) I chose this as another golden line because I found it nostalgic. When I was little I was the slowest out of all my siblings, so whenever I would fail at something I'd compare myself. My dad used to tell me and at times still to this day that failure is just another way of learning.

The first golden line I have chosen is "You were smart or you weren't, and failure meant you weren't". (pg. 1) I chose this as a golden line because I believe a lot of people see failure in that way. I think failure discourages people from trying again. I feel like we should embrace our failures. It should be seen as a learning experience. The second golden line I choose is "Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them." (pg.3) I chose this as a golden line because I dealt with that for a long time. For me it was easier to hide them rather than overcoming them, but I have learned along the way that at some point in time they need to be dealt with and it is always better to deal with your deficiencies sooner rather than later.

My 1st golden line is the adopting of a view for yourself, I feel this can be a very sharp edged sword depending how one perceives their self. If you are one to beat yourself up for not meeting a self-expected standard such as an a on “A” test and start punishing yourself for it this is a bad thing. The other positive side of that sword is taking the lesser grade and chalk it up as a lesson learned and study harder for the next test.

My 2nd choice is “Believing that your qualities are carved in stone”. It states that this morale standard is part of the fixed mindset and creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over. Averages have shown that the gifted individuals who are fortunate enough to be one of the intelligent elites who have little difficulty in academic matters tend to be in this fixed mind set. However, as this article is asking us to consider is this an acquired mindset or inherit. This is ours to ponder.

1. "They believe that a person's true potential is unknown (and unknowable); that it's impossible to foresee what can be accomplished with years of passion, toil, and training." This line stood out to me because it shows that no one can truly know what they are destined to do and not one person is meant to do just one thing within their lifetime. People are constantly learning and growing and for a certain time period a certain career or job or school may keep someone happy, but one day they may want to learn something different. In the growth mindset it is good to learn something new.
2. "With the growth mindset, you believe you can develop yourself then you're open to accurate information about your current abilities, even if it's unflattering." This stood out to me because it is representing how even with your flaws you are still trying your best to understand them and gain from them. You understand that you may not be able to do it all, but you still continue to try and never just give up when something gets challenging.

I selected those as my golden lines because the first one is saying you do not have to be a pro at the topic to end up succeeding. While the other is if you have an open mind at the end it will be okay because you are refusing to be categorized with others and You do not give up. On the other hand my five key words are try, mindset growth, focus., challenge and effort. These words stood out for many reasons and help gain knowledge of the articles message. The thesis statement would have to be is as a person your not perfect and it is important to keep an open mind to succeed in the long run while learning from your mistakes.

And that's what they were doing - getting smarter. Not only weren't they discouraged by failure, they didn't even think they were failing. They thought they were learning." I chose this line because regardless if a person does not know something they can learn from their mistakes and it should not discourage them whatsoever it should only motivate them for future successes. It should be a motivation to be better and do better. The second golden line I chose is "For thirty years my research has shown that the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value." I chose this line because it is extremely true. The author states whatever mindset you have whether if it's in a positive or negative way that will determine your outlook on how you want your life to be. Nothing should discourage you regardless of any failures you encounter. It should all be a motivation for you to succeed in the future.

“The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even when it’s not going well, is the hall mark if growth mindset” (1).

I chose this as a Golden Line because when we are struggling and facing challenges we never faced, what we take from that experience makes up stronger, shapes us into who we are, although during those times we might not always remember that.

The second Golden Line I picked was, “The view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life” (2).

I think sometimes we forget how powerful our minds can be. When used against yourself, it can change the way you do day to day things and what you can accomplish.

Golden lines:
"How can a simple belief have the power to transform your psychology and, as a result, your life?" (1)
This was one of my golden lines because it really made me think and it also made me realize how crazy it is that we are able to have this mindset.
"Excuse me, was there death and destruction, or just a grade, a ticket, and a bad phone call?"
(2)
I chose this as a golden line because this something that goes through my head a thousands times a day when I am dealing with unreasonable and stubborn people at work.

"the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life" (2).
This was my golden line because I think it’s really important for people understand this. The way you think about yourself can really affect your lifestyle. I just love this quote and it just speaks for itself.
"it's not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest" (2).
This was my second golden line. Just because you might fail classes in school does not mean that you’re not smart. Or just because other people are smarter than you doesn’t mean anything either. You can also improve on whatever it is that you're struggling with.

¨This growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others¨(1)
I picked this as my Golden Line because it gives you the definition of a growth mindset. Its all through the efforts you put into it to succeed and the way you work things out.
¨No, but they believe that a persons true potential is unknown (and unknowable)¨ (2)
This is my second Golden Line and the reason I picked this was because this says a lot, no one knows their potential until they do it , and if they do it they can be unstoppable. The sky is the limit.
