During the 1660's the Proprietors of the big colony and land named Carolina realized that it hard for one governor and one assembly to manage a colony as big as Carolina. The major settlements in the Carolinas were:
Cape Fear, Charles Town and Albemarle. These settlements far apart from each other that traveling from one place to another was difficult to do.

Because the colony was too big, In 1691, a governor was assigned to look after the whole of Carolina and another person, the deputy governor was assigned for the North of the colony.

In 1712, North and South Carolina were officially divided.

Not dominated by a specific religion which gave way to religious freedom for Baptists, Anglicans and others. Refer to Religion in the Colonies. Religion in the Colonies was extremely diverse and many of the religious groups, such as the Puritans and the Quakers established the first of the 13 colonies on the basis of their religious beliefs. The long, hazardous, 3000 mile trip from Europe to North America was undertaken by many in a search for religious freedom.

The Southern Colonies had the largest slave population who worked on the plantations.Plantations grew cotton, tobacco, rice, sugar, indigo (a purple dye), and other crops

Some of the plantations were massive and consisted of the main house, slave quarters, a dairy, blacksmith's shop, laundry, smokehouse and barns which made the plantations to large degree, self-sufficient

Crops were traded for items that could not be produced on the plantations including shoes, lace, thread, farm tools and dishes

By 1775 North Carolina was governed as a Royal Colony.

Meaning and Definition of Royal Colonies: A Royal colony was ruled or administered by officials responsible to and appointed by the reigning sovereign of Great Britain. A Royal colony was administered by a royal governor and council that was appointed by the British crown. The Royal Colonies had a representative assembly that was elected by the people.

The government of the Royal Colonies was based on the following principles:

These colonies were ruled by the British monarchs
These British King had control over all unsold public lands and his Governor had the power to allocate the lands
The King appointed a governor and a council to assist him with the government of the Colony
The colonies elected their own legislature (parliament)
The governor controlled taxes and expenditure but could not authorize the payment of his own salary. The colonial legislatures had the authority to approve or delay paying a salary to the royal governor

Propriety to Royal Colonies - The Carolinas
The Carolinas were originally Proprietary Colonies controlled by the Lords Proprietors. In 1663 King Charles II granted the Province of Carolina to eight of his favorites. In 1691, the Colonial Proprietors of Carolina appointed a governor for the whole of Carolina and a deputy governor for the North of the colony. In 1712, North and South Carolina were officially divided. In 1719, South Carolina, was taken back from the Lords Proprietors and made a royal colony. By 1729 all but the heir of Sir George Carteret, had sold their shares in the colony to the Crown and North Carolina also became a royal colony in 1729.

At the time, it was reported that there were 9,535,483 people living in the state, and that represented a significant rise of 18.5% from the numbers declared in 2000.

It's now estimated that North Carolina's population has grown even further to 10.39 million, making North Carolina the 10th most populous state in the country.
