For me, to be a good friend, you have to listen, not judge and be there for your friends. You have to laugh with your friends, be cheerful, not be afraid to talk about your problems, have some repartee and have real discussions.

His name is Arthur, he's a really good guy, really kind, really intelligent,... a really interesting person. He's also french. 

With Arthur, we used to do a lot of things together. We used to spend the major part of the day together, actually. We went through a lot. 
We went to a lot of concerts, we DID a lot of concerts, we performed in front of a lot of people,... we used to play music together almost every day. Music  was our biggest common point. His instrument was the Drums. But he wanted to try new things. So I bought him a bass, one day. And I taught him almost everything I knew. We were having good times...

He is a good friend because he is a really patient guy. He was always there when something was wrong. He used to listen, and to actually care about people's problem. 
A very specific thing about him, is that he was always ready to do stuff, to do things, even if those things didn't make any sense. Even if thos thing were completely useless. Even if those thigs were hard, long and borring to accomplish. He had way to much time in his hands... it was awsome. Arthur was always down to do pretty much anything: fishing at 2 am, a concert in a trunk's pickup, steal traffic sign,...

And this, is what makes a great friend, to my eyes: to always follow each other in the situation we're deal with, whether good or bad.
