Color-Coding for Writing Instruction and Counterclaims!

Teach counterclaim WITH thesis/claim statement.
Use sentence starters to differentiate for students who need help getting started.
- Although some might say/think…,
- Critics argue…; however, …
- It is often thought that…, but…
- While some might argue…,

And teach your students to color-code each part. See example above:

Yellow = Counterclaim
Green = topic
Blue = stance/opinion
Purple = reasons WHY you are taking this position.

This helps the students remember to address a counterclaim in the body of their essay because they SHOULD be referring back to their thesis statement at every stage of the writing process. This ensures they are on track to their final destination of supporting and proving their argument.
