I think that the question about making their learning meaningful is a great thing that we should be doing with every lesson and activity. Although we may not be able to cater to all interests, one way I make our learning meaningful is to make real world connections with everything I teach. How do you make learning meaningful?

Checklist

I appreciate the checklist and the simplicity of the arrangement. Having ten indicators seems manageable and all are relevant to children’s social, emotional, and educational growth. This is a document that I will absolutely save and use for future reference. The biggest indicator on the list in my opinion is #10; Do the children and families feel safe and secure within the program? We know that if a child does not feel safe in their environment, they become disconnected from the learning process. Do you feel that this question is aimed at emotional safety or physical indicators or both? And how would you make a child and family feel safe and secure within your classroom?

Number eight is one area that stands out to me. When I first started in early childhood, I would always hear in trainings how important it is to read both individually and in a group setting. I think that since I have more experience, I understand this concept more and more. I have been in classrooms where the teacher only reads to students during a group read aloud time. Half the time the teacher is telling the students to stop talking, or pay attention (which I have found myself doing as well from time to time.) Reading to one or two students really helps form a bond with students and you can point out different things if you are reading one on one as well.

I struggled to choose one indicator from the checklist. They are all so important. The indicator that has always gotten away from me is #3. I am great at displaying the children's original artwork. I despise cookie cutter art and have for years. I love watching the children create their own masterpieces and displaying them around the room. The part that I never seem to get right is adding their writing and dictating their stories. There are so many of them too! This is definitely an area that I intend to work on. I need to carry a notebook with me at all times apparently so I can capture those stories. The other indicator I sometimes wonder if I am meeting to fidelity is making sure they are playing and using materials the majority of the day. We are a part of the elementary school and we follow a schedule just like the other elementary classrooms. They attend music, art, PE, library, and guidance. How do I ensure they are meeting all the parts of this indicator when I am not the teacher for these specials? Do I just assume it's happening? This is one that might take some time to wrap my brain around how this looks when it is not my classroom.
