I personally grew up in an In-home Daycare and to this day I go back and work there part time. Starting from 8th grade and now, 1st year in college, I helped my grandmother with her daycare business. There are many perks in working in a daycare but there are also quite a few drawbacks.

It’s a great experience to see babies from 2 months old grow up to be 3-4 years of age ready to go to preschool. The bonds and connections created with these kids makes it difficult to say “goodbye”.  Growing up at this daycare, I believe it has taught me a lot from a young age. Recently, it made me wonder how it would’ve been if my parents had sent me to a daycare facility rather than an in-home daycare.
 
Looking for care is not easy, in fact nowadays there is a huge demand, which puts parents in a tough situation to find care for their child. At our daycare, we have had many calls but we were unable to take them because we are booked all the way through next June. Although it may be difficult to find care for your child, what would your preference be? If I were to choose a daycare for my future child, I would definitely go with an In-home daycare.

Without a doubt there have been difficult times where she wanted to retire or she wanted to find a different occupation but she stayed strong for 31 years and ongoing. It’s amazing to see that she is still working at the age of 79. I’ve learned a lot from this interview for an example, the obstacles she had to overcome to her success now. She loves what she does because she has grown up to take care of kids and enjoy seeing the small stages and achievements of the children. She explains the details on what her daycare provides to her opinion of what she prefers compared to a facility and an in-home daycare. I will go in more depth about the interview in my FINDINGS!

For the interview, we went over many aspects such as the daycare policy, waitlist, her experience, etc. The beginning and her first stages of being in the industry she had started in Korea as a director of a Kindergarten. She enjoyed the lavish life that it had given her but then she had to move due to personal reasons and that is how she eventually immigrated to America with her 3 young children. It was difficult for her to adjust to the different lifestyle with money struggles so she had been introduced to babysitting 2 children in San Francisco. This is where she began to open up her daycare business. She got her license in San Francisco and stayed for about 3 years. She then bought a house in Oakland which is still her current residence and she had continued her work for 23 years. Her maximum capacity for the day care is 14 children: 4 Infants and 10 toddlers & up. She only accepts 11 children because it is difficult to manage all the kids by herself. A waitlist is almost a guarantee and there are parents that wait from 3 months - 1 year to enroll their child. Compared to both In home daycare and with her experience at on-site kindergarten, she would rather continue her work at her daycare home because of the convenience and also her experience was more relaxed compared to the kindergarden. The sources that I have gone over show a great explanation on pros and cons of home daycares and daycare centers. There is also information on what the difference between the two are. Normally, daycare centers have a larger capacity for kids because it is an actual facility. In the interview, my grandmother had mentioned that her facility had around 100 kids but now her current daycare home has around 11 kids which is a lot easier to maintain on her part. Kids that enroll in a home-based daycare tend to receive more individual attention because there are less kids. Some parents may look for more of an academic advancement compared to a homey environment. Scheduling is a big problem in finding a daycare. Most in-home daycares are more flexible with their scheduling compared to an on-site daycare because it has stricter rules and regulation. Although the scheduling may be a problem, finding an availability is a big concern. As mentioned earlier, the waitlist for my grandmother’s daycare ranges from 3 months - 4 years. Since an in-home daycare has such limited space, it is harder to enroll in one that may be of your choice. On the other hand, a daycare facility has a much larger capacity so it is a higher chance to find one with no problem in enrolling. Overall, compared to both options, what is the most efficient? One is not better than the other, and it is 100% preference. “I wouldn’t want to go back to my work at a facility because there are too many kids and it is a lot more to maintain. Also, working inside my home is a lot more comfortable and convenient with bills. (translated from Korean)” says my grandmother. She enjoyed every perk that her facility had given her but in the end her choice will always come back to where she remains right now. After knowing what kind of care options are available, what would be your choice of care?
