Pi’s mom, the orangutan in Pi’s animal story (participle), refused to adapt to her circumstances or do anything that went against her morals. This resulted in her being killed by the bigger power, the cook, who had no morals and did anything to survive. When Pi glanced to look in the boat for Orange Juice (who represents Pi's mother in the animal story), he saw her slaughtered and laying “against the dead zebra” (131). The cook also got killed when his aggressive behavior went too far. All of these examples show that morality and instinctual behaviors by themselves can only take people halfway for survival, and that there needs to be a balance between the id and the superego in order for humans to have the highest chances of survival. Pi balances the options from superego and the id part of his brain to make decisions; thus, (semicolon transition comma) Pi represents the ego. He considered his options carefully, his brain balancing morality and survival. (absolute) Pi was the only survivor of the journey because he was the only person on the boat who was able to find a happy medium between the superego and the id part of his brain.
