  • Slavery was abolished in Jamaica in 1833.

    • Britain banned slavery in their country in 1833.

    • The British sent out ships to patrol the seas to stop people from smuggling slaves.

    • Slave imports were banned in the United States in 1808, but people kept capturing slaves. 

    • Keeping slaves were legal until the 13th amendment was passed.

    • In the United States, people were not paid back for the loss of property except the people who lived in Washington D.C

    • The British government gave 20 million dollars to white Caribbean land owners for the loss of their slaves.

  • In 1631, the English built  its first slave port named Coramantin.  There, seven million slaves were exported in two centuries.

  • In 1791 a group of Haitian slaves fought their owners and took back an island. This revolution was a very important milestone in the abolition of slavery.

    • If slaves fought with their masters against rebellions, they could earn their freedom.

    • On ships that were 207 tons in 1788, there had to be five slaves for every three tons of cargo.

    • Traders could not serve unfamiliar foods to the slaves, so they had to serve African meals.

    • About ten to fifteen percent of slaves died on the way to the coast of Africa when they were captured.

    • About fifteen to twenty-five percent of slaves died from the journey from Africa to the Americas.
