when Shaun walks into the room, the camera starts off at a low angle of his stumbling legs (accompanied by expressionistic shadows). as the viewer, this restricts your knowledge as you are unaware that it is Shaun until the camera tilts up to show his face. This helps creates suspense early on in the film. Also this is a classic shot used in horror films as the restrictions mean the character on screen appears more threatening. perhaps this shot and its effect help to introduce Shaun as the central protagonist as in the film he is the most threatening character towards the zombies due to his leadership and his persistence to kill as many zombies as possible.

The opening scene of Shaun of the Dead introduces our major characters and most of the important supporting characters. All the characters we meet are very quickly and effectively characterized. Ed is introduced by a series of swear words, totally lacking self awareness or care. Shaun and Liz are established as being together, as are David and Dianne. Dianne talks about David liking listed buildings and her love of theater, telling us that they are intellectual types and that Dianne loves acting. Wright is very efficient at getting these introductions out of the way quickly but still staggering them. He introduces Shaun first, of course, then Liz and Ed. Then David and Dianne are brought in when they're mentioned in the dialogue.

In the opening sequence, Shaun and Liz are sat across from each other at a table. This separation in the proxemics could represent the differences in their relationship and how they don't see eye to eye. Furthermore, we then see Ed between them as they're sat on the table. This could suggest that he's slightly involved in this relationship, in a sense that he's a bad influence on Shaun which interrupts the relationship. Then we see Dianne and David sat next to Liz. The character placement here shows that Dianne and David are on Liz's side of the argument/disagreement that she's having with Shawn. However, they're sat slightly behind Liz which could imply that they don't agree with Liz being with Shawn, but they're friends and still sided with Liz.

the opening sequence starts with an inter-contextual reference to the Romero saga of zombie films with the uncanny, heavy sync non digetic music sound. A nod to the audience that is filled in on the joke, likewise introducing a new batch of viewers to movie classics such as ''dawn of the dead''.
The Romero sound fades out and in their place we get the song ''ghost town'' which foreshadows the events about to occur in the latter part of the movie. Furthermore we are brought back to reality with the sound of a bell and a man shouting for 'last orders' which could be taken in the literal sense keeping in mind the nature of the film. We are introduced to the main title character, Shaun, with a closeup of his un-present stare, away from the camera, zoning out,

After the initial pub scene we are presented with a sequence to establish the setting and lifestyle of characters within the film lifestyle.
The scenes within the supermarket show the actions of the characters, they are particularly passive and unenergetic. This is to represent the conformity of society and how us a modern day citizens are stuck in the same routines.
The next scene of the bus stop again shows the conformity as multiple characters pull out their phones in synchronization.
Throughout this sequence the same type of shot is used: a mid shot with a slow pan to transition is used repeatably to once again in force the theme of conformity

The main idea that is presented in the opening is that we are all living like we are already zombies. This is shown through the presentation of the workers at the shopping store who are all in sync as they scan items AT THE SAME TIME! this is used to show that we aren't even human anymore as their is no expression on any of their faces.
This is the same with the Teenagers in the next shot who are shown to be walking down an alley way in a 'gang' and the majority of them are in hoodies. These are all stereotypes of how the younger generation are today.

This suggests he doesn't have a job as there is no sense of readiness or a sophisticated life style.

The mise en scene of the pub involves elements in which makes it a very traditional pub. For example, the darts board, people smoking, lots of empty glasses on the tables and old men walking around in the background. Furthermore, the elements of dark wooden furniture, red curtains and the old fashioned wallpaper also adds to the traditional British look.
