The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) are important from the business point of view as they help organizations work towards sustainable business models and success. Linking with UNSDGs allows companies to fight such issues on a global scale as poverty, inequity, and climate change, develop innovations, and improve the company's image. It also fosters long-term sustainability in equal regard toward social, environmental, and economic returns on goals and achievements. Our group is tackling the 12th UNSDG, ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ which aims at minimizing consumption and production for sustainability. The ethical issue associated with this goal relates to the effects of excessive consumption on the environment and poor production methods that result in adverse impacts on the environment. Thus, the Padlet will play the role of the collaborative workspace where ideas, sources, findings, and thoughts about sustainable solutions focusing on UNSDG 12 will be presented. This Padlet will elicit participation hence creating awareness of sustainable consumption and production among all the learners (Smith, 2020).

The Cubbie Station Company which has a reputation of owning the largest cotton farm in Australia has registered immense difficulties in regards to water utilisation procedures. Based in Queensland, it abstracts significant volumes of water from the MDB that led to worry over existing water scarcity and degradation of the basin (Murray-Darling Basin Authority, 2021). The main ethical issue that Cubbie Station has to tackle is how the company acquires water for its needs disregarding the consequences that the action has on society and the environment.

It demonstrates the appropriate use of water, for instance, the watering regimes; it also implements the myBMP program, which is aimed at ensuring appropriate usage of water and resources by the cotton growers – the members of Cotton Australia This initiative promotes the conservation of water resources and this addresses the ethical problem of the use of water in a sustainable manner.

The first and real-life ethical concern is the wastage of water both in general and improper utilization by corporations in food production. Big processing industries linked to foods like cotton and livestock in Australia have been understood to use high volumes of water from important water sources such as the Murray-Darling Basin. This is due to reasons such as the necessity for big irrigation to enhance production largely which is normally destructive to the environment (Morrison & Hatton MacDonald, 2010).

Corporate farming is also a cause of this problem as it is linked with the wrong methods of water extraction. For example, Corporate farms from Australia’s Murray Darling Basin, which constitutes approximately 40% of Australia’s agricultural production depend on water for crop irrigation especially Water-eating crops like cotton (Murray Darling Basin Authority, 2021). For instance, Cubbie Station which is among the largest cotton farms has been at the center of many worries due to its high utilization of water during irrigation, a factor that sees it use as much as 460 gigaliters per year during the period of high use (Lloyd, 2021). These water extraction processes create adverse impacts on river systems and groundwater sources and have a great impact on the small-holding farmers and the local ecosystems.

The implications of these unsustainable water practices remain so across the large agribusinesses. More specifically on the environment, it causes a reduction in flows in rivers and this leads to ecosystem deterioration, loss of biodiversity, and eventual collapse of aquatic systems (Grafton et al., 2013). For Instance, the extraction of water from the Murray-Darling Basin has been over and beyond necessitating reduced water flow which resulted in toxic algal blooms that prompted a mass fish dieout in 2019 as noted by Morrison and Hatton MacDonald (2010)

It has a social effect that is not least in magnitude. Downstream farmers are challenged by water scarcity, which raises questions about people’s capacity to irrigate crops and feed themselves. The indigenous peoples implicated within these riverine systems have similarly preliminary and substantial links with the water bodies and they encounter discontinuation of their conventional ways of life and lost food security (Weir, 2011). According to the records by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES), small-scale farmers have received 30% fewer water allocations compared to the 2000 levels because of corporate mining (ABARES, 2020). Such inequality increases social conflict between large input and output companies and local support from water resources which are comparatively small in size.

Companies could use water-efficient gadgets such as drip irrigation or precision irrigation for water conservation. These technologies reduce the wastage of water through water irrigation by delivering water to the required parts of the plant in the right quantity. Research has also revealed that the efficiency of using precision irrigation can lower the quantity of water used by about 30 % without compromising crop production (Grafton et al., 2013). As it is a known fact that the Australian cotton farming sector loses more water than it even produces, these innovations could significantly lower water usage.

Another solution is the adoption of measures of water recycling within the farms’ boundaries themselves. This includes harvesting of runoff water for use in irrigation processes therefore cutting on the use of freshwater sources. A study by Schirmer et al. (2018) shows that with water recycling it would be possible to reduce water use by 20-30% in the farms of Australia. According to Target 6, the strategies that have been outlined above would fall under the following approach. 3 of the UNSDGs, which involves endeavoring to reduce the emissions of hazardous substances, recycling, and better quality of water.

The current efforts for water management shift, such as the Basin Plan are still within legal and institutional frameworks and mainly at the systemic level. But it accepts pressure builds up from the bottom, with grass-roots organizations, consumer boycotts, and other related actions that can influence the lower order. Awareness campaigns thus contribute to the change of attitude whereby people get into the processes of solution provision, while sustainable product advocacy has provision for change in demand that affects organizational practices. Some of the Key Concepts Identified in the PadletIn this Padlet, the topic of discussion focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) and the relevance that they hold in the current world for better business performance and career success, with emphasis on ethical consideration. These are therefore the main factors that have come up regarding the importance of UNSDGs in the modern world to businesses and people. Reputation and Trust: In this way, such companies also gain improved status as well as consumer confidence by embracing the UNSDGs as their select organizational goals. Explaining how ethical behavior is useful in customer and investor attraction; Pisani et al. (2017) postulated that socially competent consumers and investors are vital. Long-term Profitability: This is particularly true when such a company continually pursues goals such as UNSDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production while concurrently delivering sustainable efficiency with sustainable profitability. Ethically operating organizations reduce exposure and assure the longevity of the business (Heras-Saizarbitoria et al., 2021). Risk Management: Standardization of sustainability reduces legal and market risks within organizations and gives the companies a chance to portray themselves as strictly ethical (Pisani et al., 2017). Awareness and Responsibility: Customers have now realized how they can support sustainability, by buying goods that are friendly to the environment. They promote UNSDGs since purchasing decisions can be made with fundamental ethical options at their disposal (Heras-Saizarbitoria et al., 2021). Ethical Consumerism: Customers have shifted their preference towards ethical brands and green products, which in turn, compels the companies to come up with sustainable practices (Pisani et al., 2017). Ways through which UNSDGs and Targets are particularly relevant for business beings and personal advancementUNSDGs can be particularly regarded as a kind of compass directing the development of firms and individuals around the globe. Two of these are business sustainability-oriented, namely the Sixth SDG: Clean water and sanitation, and the Twelfth SDG, which offers a clear architecture on how business operations can be arranged to address the sustainability goals in the long run. In the case of individuals, such awareness helps one to achieve sustainable development goals at the global level (Heras-Saizarbitoria et al., 2021).
