By using tools such as mindfulness, trauma-informed teaching, and restorative justice, I am demonstrating to students that not only are academics valued, but also their social and emotional health. By approaching classroom instruction and classroom management with these tools, educators are building trust with their students. This trust is fundamental to establishing a positive and productive learning environment. Being sensitive to the social and emotional needs of students is essential to our ultimate goal of maximizing learning.

By teaching students to practice mindfulness, we can reduce anxiety, allowing students to focus more on learning. Trama-informed teaching can also help reduce the effects of negative emotions, which will help create a learning environment that is a refuge for students. Restorative justice helps to maintain the gains made by these student-first practicies and if enacted systemically, will allow for equitable responses to student behavior that will disrupt the trauama cycle that punishment perpetuates. If these tools are used effectively together, learning environemnts will be created that allow students to thrive, both academically and socioemotionally.

Trauma-informed teaching could simply mean being aware of the physical cues that you are giving students throughout the day. Having a negative tone of voice and body language can have a dramatic effect on the climate of the class. In the article on trauma informed mindful teaching practicies, the author reminds us that we can adjust our physical presence to be more "congruent with the type of response and culture you would like to create" (Wiggs).

Examining how these tools can be implemented into the classroom has helped me expand my idea of what a radically inclusive classroom can look like. So many of us are accustomed to traditional forms of discipline, but rethinking how we do this to improve the learning experience of students is necessary to reduce trauma and get better academic and social outcomes for our students.
