         <title>Chad, Africa</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Chad has one of the lowest rates of electricity when compared to the rest of the world. Only 10% percent of the population having access to electricity, with it falling to 1% in rural areas. Chad in 2017 only used 224 million kWh in total of electricity, when compared to USA we use 3.8 trillion kWh of electricity in total. This shows how little Chad has access to electricity, which causes them to have multiple outages. Chad mainly gets its energy using traditional wood burning fuel which is unsustainable. In the future Chads government hopes to expand its electrical supply to help sustain its 15 million people. -Matthew Kula</div>]]></description>

Almost 51% (700 million! people) of India still uses solid wastes as a source of fuel. Even 'advanced' sources of fuel only stretch to include kerosene in most places. In cities, access to electricity is spotty at best, as high (over)demand and poor infrastructure often limit the usability of power lines. Only around 8% of the country of 1.38 billion has reliable access to a reliable public energy grid, but even this is a misleading statistic on account of the disproportionate energy distribution along wealth and social class lines.<br>-Jacob Limerick</div>]]></description>

The main source of energy in Haiti is chopping down trees that can be burned for energy, causing&nbsp;their soil to erode more easily, and therefore mudslides are more common. Inefficient technology, poor operational practices, and inadequate maintenance limit the supply of energy, as does a shortage of natural gas, which fuels about 70 percent of Bangladesh's power. Some things that Zambia could implement to get this percentage up would be to regulate energy prices, increase income, and use domestic renewable energy resources, like biomass. Madagascar has so much potential for renewable energy resources, but lacks the ability to harness it. The majority of the country isn't even on the power grid as the very little infrastructure is focused on on the few urban areas in Madagascar.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The latest UN data shows that energy poverty levels in Lebanon have doubled since the onset of the financial crisis in late 2019, and today, 82 percent of the Lebanese population is living in energy poverty.&nbsp;<br>Out of these four million poor people, about 34 percent are living in extreme energy poverty. Across the country, around 650,000 homes don’t have access to state electricity. All parts of Lebanon are subject to prolonged power cuts.<br>Meanwhile, fuel prices have risen more than 10 times since last year, following the progressive lifting of fuel subsidies without any alternative support for the country’s vulnerable. Forty litres of driving fuel – about a car tank – is now worth almost the unchanged national minimum monthly wage of 675,000 Lebanese lira (the equivalent of $32 on the black market, which most people use). About 19% of homes in Honduras do not have access to electricity. This is because the System Operator of Honduras reported that the reason for the failure was heavy rains and damage caused by a tree that fell directly onto the transmission line. The regional electrical system is designed in such a way that interstate connections can be severed in order to protect the national grids of each country.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Djibouti has a very low percentage of people who have electricity. with only 53% of the country having electricity, that leaves 47% of the country without electricity and access to good energy. Djibouti is in a category called least developed countries. Having some of the least development over the years and struggling to have clean water to drink as well as getting electricity to 100% of the country. In 2017 Djibouti used 12 billion BTU as compared to the United States 98 Quadrillion BTU. 12 billion BTU is equal to 0.00% of the worlds total energy consumption. Djibouti usually gets its energy supply from thermal plants and also hydroelectricity imported from Ethiopia which is not a very sustainable source of energy. Djibouti is trying to expand its energy to more sustainable sources as well as get more electricity for their 1 million people in the country.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Harrison DeLong (3rd)<br><br>After a brutal civil war, South Sudan is barely able to rise to its feet. Leaving most infrastructure in ruin, the people of SS look to household fuels(mostly wood) that are traded in city markets to meet their energy demands. Only 6.8% of the population has access to electricity, most of which is unreliable at best. In the rubble of a destroyed nation, the people are furthering its barren landscape by overusing wood supplies in local forests. This only supports the need for more clean, reliable energy in the starving and impoverished nation.&nbsp; &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lithuania is a developed nation, but it still has to rely on Russia and Sweden for most of it's power. Due to the fact that they import most of their energy the cost of electricity is among the highest in the EU.Due to the fact that the price is high, the energy poverty level is about 15% with over 30% spending more than 10% of their household income on energy yearly. 15% spent more than 20% of their household income on energy. Lithuania is currently trying to separate themselves from Russia and become more independent and reliant on power from the EU, doing this could help lower the cost of energy.<br><br>-Emerson</div>]]></description>

This lack of energy  is caused by many reasons such as the lack of investment and production of electricity over the last 15 years, low rainfall over the past few years, an increase in deforestation, and a lack of financial resources to operate their existing thermal power plant. Furthermore, as their capital, Bujumbura, has returned to peace, there has been a great increase in the demand for electricity near the city. </div>]]></description>

The thick jungle and rough terrain make its hard for the country to have a single grid which makes local grids the better choice but the initial cost and community approval make it hard to establish. Many don't have the financial capacity to pay for energy resources. This energy poverty is extremely important because it has stifled economic activity and job production, which is ultimately adding to all kinds of poverty in Nigeria. Nigeria has been excluded from government-supplied energy goods. Energy availability can severely impact the life of an average individual. Nigeria's life expectancy is about 20 years lower than the United States. It's very likely that their access to energy could be adding to this issue.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Only about 13% of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's almost 90 million population have access to electricity with over 98% of that being produced by hydroelectric power. In rural areas the amount of people with access to electricity goes down to an alarming 4%. Almost all of the energy produced is from hydro-power with a very small amount coming from oil and gas.          <description><![CDATA[<div>In Brazil, most of the rural population (currently about 13% of its total population) had absolutely no access to the national power grid. This is largely because expanding the energy grid to these far, rural areas would lead to high energy costs that rural families simply could not afford. However, the Brazilian government has recently started a project to reduce energy poverty in these rural areas by expanding their use of natural renewable energy (specifically hydropower and wind energy due to its geography) to expand access to energy, which has resulted in 100% of the population of Brazil having access to energy as of 2018.</div>]]></description>
