Winston: Winston is a middle aged man who is fully against the ways and ideas of Big Brother. Throughout the book he is trying to uncover the past and what the government is trying to hide from everybody. He expresses his feelings by writing in his diary, when he is in the spot where the telescreens are not able to see him. He is curious for what a new life would be like if the government was changed.
Julia: Julia is about 10 years younger than Winston and shares the same feelings toward Big Brother. Living the scandalous life style of sneaking around with Party members is how she gets back at Big Brother and the Party. The Party members are able to conceal her secrets due to the fact that they would get in a great deal of trouble if they were to tell about their actions.

The technology that is used 24/7 in our lives to communicate with others is also a way for the government to see what we are up to. This ties along with 1984 due to the fact that telescreens are pieces of technology that can see your every move to make sure that "rules" are being followed and that the government, and in this case Big Brother and the Party, is not being disrespected.

Anthem is a book that is very similar to 1984 in some aspects. For example, one of the end goals in the society/governments mind is that no one is higher than another. Everyone will be equal and there will be no such thing as individualism. Another example is that both have a main character that wants to change the way that the society is run. The rebellious actions taken by these characters make the book more interesting to read and also show that these lifestyles are not a good way to live.

Likes: I enjoyed the overall concept of the book, that someone was trying to figure out the past and hopefully bring it back.
Dislikes: I did not like how the book ended. It did not keep Winston's true personality in tack as things started to move towards the end. It was not the ending that one would hope for once "going through this whole journey with Winston."

The book shows us how controlling the government in a society can be. It makes you think about how everything is run and if our lives are run like that to any extent. It also shows us what someone can do when given too much power, it can change someone for the worst, just like it did with O'Brien.

This is a novel that will keep you on your toes. After one chapter ends you want to keep reading to figure out what is going to happen next in the mysterious life of Winston Smith. In the end, even though it wasn't my favorite, it showed you how fast a character can change when you are least expecting it.
