"Besides, this Duncan / Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been / So clear in his great office, that his virtues / Will plead like angels" (1.7.16-19).

Answer the following:

the speaker and the one spoken to (could be himself/herself)

- Macbeth is the one who is talking and he is talking to Lady Macbeth about his plans.

the context (what was happening at this point in the play)

- Macbeth is talking to Lady Macbeth about his plans to kill Duncan. He is giving her his ideas that would be the most successful in killing Duncan and taking the crown.

Analyze this passage from the New Historicist perspective. (Hint: Why would Shakespeare emphasize that the King is good in this play?)

- The meaning behind this passage is tat of a need and want for power. Macbeth wants power from the good king and there is no real way he can 100% know he is going to get this power. He is skeptical about his ideas and needs to talk to other for support. This want for power but not knowing how to obtain it is a New Historicist way of looking at this passage.

How did the time period in which the work was written affect how and why it was written? (Think: who was in power at the time Shakespeare wrote this?) In the time that Shakespeare wrote Macbeth queen Elizabeth just died and King James the I just got in power. This effects on why it was written because he wants to get on the good side of the new king and showing the people how committing treason like Macbeth will eventually lead to their own downfall.

How does placing the piece in the context of our time period affect its meaning and how it is perceived?

Placing this piece in the context of our time period would affect its meaning because people are now more worried about political corruption and if we can really trust them it is one of the greatest concern in 2020

Person 1: Why bother viewing literature through the New Historicist perspective? Why should we still use it to analyze literature?

New historicism brings into account the deeper, often unthought of meaning of Macbeth, not just the facts. New historicism allows you to see or think of the deeper meanings hidden inside texts or plays. Those deeper meanings could live on into different time periods, but still be relevant. The idea that people are submissive to power is seen in the world today whether it's in the classroom with teachers and students or the government and the people who reside in the country. New historicicsm allows us to connect art from different time periods to current events in the world today that old historicism wouldn't allow us to do.
