I think that the European Contact had a negative effect on the Aztecs because when they arrived their leader Cortes destroyed the Aztecs city Tenochtitlan, which was the 4th most populated city in the world at the time and when Hernan Cortes destroyed Tenochtitlan the Chinampas got destroyed along with it.
