The pastor's reaction to the government restricting his practices is to ignore the law and practice his faith regardless. The pastor decided that no body of government could dictate what he would be able and not able to do when it comes to religious traditions. Although snake handling was illegal, he continued to do it in order to follow the commands given by god. The pilgrims were Separatists, meaning they wanted to practice Catholicism  in the way that they believed was right. The people in this image seems to be venerating a snake, which is often perceived as evil.


The snake handling pastor had a total disregard to the law prohibiting snakes inside churches. I think this says a lot about their willful faith to their God and what he has in store for them. The church seems indifferent about the state laws about handling snakes. They firmly believe that their faith requires them to handle the rattlesnakes and are already aware of the risks.
