The Louisiana purchase was critical to western expansion because it nearly doubled the U.S in size to the west.

2. As the United states expanded so did the demand for slaves, more land meant more agriculture and more agriculture meant more slaves were needed, this caused a lot of tension between the northern states and the southern states, eventually this caused Americans to turn on one another in the Civil war. 

3. Techniques and strategies used by the artist are, relative size, Composition, caption, labeling, and symbolism. I believe that the message of the cartoon is to represent how the Monroe doctrine kept the European countries from attempting to colonize the Americas.

4. The Monroe doctrine prevented european countries from attempting to colonize the Americas, this is important because it established an are of control for the U.S and allowed the U.S to expand freely without european conflicts.

5. one similarity between the North and South is that most states used to be slave states excluding a few in the north, one difference is that the North fought to free slaves and the south fought to keep slaves.
