I would walk away from it immediately to try to get away from it. This pig slaughter was different because Jack and his “tribe” killed it out of anger with Ralph and Piggy. They were angry that Ralph and Piggy wouldn’t go with them to search for the beast. Because it is so grotesque I can understand his obsession with the pig but his conscience starts talking to him. He personifies the monster as the “Lord of the Flies” aka the pig head. The Lord of the Flies talks to him as he is dehydrated and hallucinating in the sun. It tells him that he is a part of Simon and that the beast is inside of him. I think the purpose of the chapter is to show exactly what the effect the sun and diet has had on the boys.

I was disturbed by the brutal hunting scene and the fact that the group is now split up. Jack is acting like a crazy dictator. He doesn’t really know how to do things that are good in the long run, and overall he is very selfish. Ralph seems like he is trying to do what’s best for the group. This pig killing is different because it is much more violent. It talks about how there was blood everywhere and how the pig was squealing in pain. The begging of the chapter is relitivaly harmless, but once Simon starts going insane it gets weird really fast. The most disturbing thing to me is definitely Simon bumping into the “Lord of the Flies”. A dead pig head on a stick. It’s gross to think about, and the fact that simon was mesmerized by it and stayed to look at it is very concerning. The slaughter is done out of pure anger towards Piggy and Ralph, which is horrible considering that it involved death, and not only that but a very long, painful death as described for the pig. It’s very important because it shows just how these boys couldn’t stay sane enough to work together and survive together. I feel like the worst part was when jack and his clan were killing the pig. The way the author was describing them killing the pig wa extremely grotesque. There was extreme emphasis on how the pig was screaming in pain and how there was so much blood. Also, when they were killing the pigs earlier in the book it was for survival- this kill was just out of anger and pure violence. This shows how angry they all are which will probably lead to bad encounters in the future. It was also extremely gross when simon was staring at “the lord of the flies” which was the pig head on a stick. I believe this encounter with the lord of the flies was showing how the fear in all the boys was making them feel crazy and insane. This chapter definitely showed that their civilization will not last much longer. At this point they’re slept into different tribes and they’re not working together in the slightest. I also thought that the death/killing of the pig was gross. They gave a lot of detail, and that really added to the disturbing nature of the whole chapter. This slaughter is different than the killing of the other pigs, because the boys take joy in killing this pig. It seems like their primal instincts are taking over. They are no longer killing for food, but to satisfy the overwhelming desire to kill something. First and most obvious, Jack and his hunters are OBSESSED with hunting, blood, and killing. They even put the head of the pig on a spear which is very creepy. They also start to divide and split up. A separate tribe starts to emerge from Jack and his rebellion against Ralph. This chapter was about showing how the island is changing them all and the effects it's having on their survival system. Simon is the only one really realizing it while he's basically slowly going crazy.
