One of the ways they kept the rivalry pressured was by attempting to get atmospheric control before the other. Before the US's successful moon landing, the USSR had many failed attempts that caused frustration. They hoped that if they could successfully land on the moon before the US, they would be able to snatch first place in the race.
There were threats of nuclear weapons, and it was crucial for the US to not lose ground to the USSR. Also before the moon landing, the US launched their first satellite named Explorer 1. Another step ahead meant that both countries were equally distant in the race. 
Things were heated, and both countries were preparing big projects. In 1959, the USSR launched their second man-made object into space, and the first to have landed on the moon. The US engineered a small capsule, sending the first man into space. 
The United States was fast moving, and sent the first American to orbit earth in 1962. Later that year, they announced their plans to land on the moon. The Soviet had 4 failed launch attempts, and the moon landing declared the United States to have won the Space race.
