Athena taught the wives of men how to weave and spin wool. There was a girl who had incredible talent for weaving and she soon became prideful. Her name was Arachne. She stated that she could weave better than Athena herself. Athena heard the girl's claim and came to the mortal world to punish her pride. Athena was about to kill her when the young girl gifted her a cloak. Athena appreciated the gift a proposed a deal. The two of them would each weave whatever they wished, and the villagers would judge the pieces. Arachne weaved beautiful and joyous scenes that made the villagers laugh and smile while Athena weaved magnificent and terrifying scenes of the life of the gods and the futures of man. The villagers wept at Athena's weaving and when Arachne saw Athena's loom, she went and hung herself on a nearby tree. Athena transformed the girl's body into a spider. The spider could now spin without competition.
