After reading this article I will definitely be taking a listen to these songs, especially the Tom Morello piece and the song by Troye Sivan and Charlie XCX. These songs struck me as interesting due to their upbeat and poppy description as well as the authors take on the songs. The author of this article describes the deeper meanings of these new releases making me that more inclined to actually listen to them. They describe the song “1999” as a look back on simpler times and the longing for them. I feel like when you are given background and insight on what a song is truly saying it enhances your listening experience and allows you to explore new types of music before actually listening to them. The authors addition of some songs by lesser known/up and coming artists was refreshing and opened me up to new songs I would have never listened to otherwise.

After reading this article, what songs, if any, would you listen to from the list? What did the author do that made you more likely to explore these songs?

I really enjoyed this article as I am very into music and love to listen to it. All these songs seem very upbeat and uplifting, and I enjoyed reading into the songs. It made me understand the songs even more before I listened to them, and made me get more into the songs as I know what they were truly about. After reading this article, the songs I would listen to from the list would be "Tints," Anderson .Paak feat. Kendrick Lamar, "1999," Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, and "Famous," AlunaGeorge. I would listen to these because they seem very upbeat, and seems like songs I would like, and after listing to them, I really did enjoy them and even added them into my song playlist. The way the author described the songs intrigued me more to listen to them, and they way he described it matched up pretty well to how the outcome of the song was. Do you usually read into songs before you listen to them?

Sam, I agree that the author made the songs more intriguing. I have honestly never looked into music much before listening to it but after reading this article I might try it more often. I feel like with reading the authors take on the songs it was very easy to tell if the song would be something I would enjoy listening to. When you point out that reading this allowed you to know what the songs were truly about I didn't realize that would be an aspect of a song I would care about but it really did enhance my listening experience.

Sam and Alena, I agree with what you both have said about how reading into the music and band can make the music much more enjoyable. I like knowing the backstory of the singers, writers, performers, and the story behind whatever song they may be singing, because there is always a story behind it. Reading the backstories of the music and the band can help you feel like you almost know the artists, which, to me at least, makes the music that much more enjoyable. The songs that I would listen to out of this playlist are probably "Tints" by Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar because I have been a fan of Kendrick Lamar for a while now and I always like listening to his new music. Another song I would listen to is "California Friends" by the Regrettes because they remind me of a band from the 90's called The Strokes that I have loved for a long time. Hearing new music that reminds me of music that I already love but isn't being made anymore is a great feeling, because it's almost like that band is still performing, but instead its a new, young, different band.

"'Give me my name back’ is a song for those who have suffered emotional and physical abuse, it's for everyone who has lost an important part of themselves and need to reclaim their identity, dignity and self-worth in order to move forward with their lives."

Jing, I would have to agree with you in the statement of being when you read into the music, it is easier to tell which songs you know you will like and what you won't. I don't really get into music too much as it is hard to keep up with the music world like most people do, but reading in to the music might help me to become more involved in the music, where as I can just read into the music before I listen to it to possible find out if I like it. That way I don't have to spend time browsing through songs I don't even like, I could just read about them and figure out the deeper meaning behind each line, and where it comes from. What is everyone's favorite genre of music? I would say mine is rap and country, but usually I tend to like everything.

I really liked this article! I felt like it was lighthearted, yet informative. Coming from my point of view, I don't really listen to a ton of music that would be considered "in", and honestly, I don't know if these songs are from people who are really famous? I'm really out of it, as you can tell. But, I do think that these songs seem like nice additions to my music, and would definitely add an upbeat feel to my normal depressing soundtrack. The song that interest me most is definitely 1999, because I was just born then, so I guess I don't really know what it was like to live then? But, I still am a proud '99 baby, so I feel like the way this song is described could give me a good feel of what it's like. My question is, are you guys willing to explore different music like this often? Or do you kind of stick to what you know, like I do.

Alena, I agree with what you said about learning the backstory to a song, and how it can make it more personable. I don't think about this a lot when it comes to songs that just seem really happy and don't seem like they have a message, but I do this a lot with sad songs and songs that have a lot of emotion in them. Now, looking back on this, I feel like I don't give enough credit to the happy songs that are written and performed, because I feel like they don't have a message, and they probably do! What do you guys think is the best genre of music for getting your message across, if there is any?

I think knowing the message before hand can really give you insight on the song and make you enjoy it more when you know where the writer is coming from. Also, I like that you took the time to actually listen to the songs you read about, and it makes me want to do the same. I would also pick 1999 to listen to, because it sounds so upbeat and fun. I didn't think about listening to Famous, but I think now I will. My question is, which one of these was your favorite, and why?

Melissa, to answer your questions, I usually like to stick to the music genre I like, sometimes it is hard for me to step out of my comfort zone or to listen to songs that are different than my usual taste. Sometimes I will go straight to hating songs right away if they are different than the usual music, which I shouldn't do, I should listen to the whole song. I don't always give songs the time of day, even if they are good, because either I won't like it or I am too lazy to even listen to it. I hope that I can read into music more and try to get into music more, because I don't always listen to music (because I am lazy) but when I do listen to music, I get very happy and get into a better mood than I already am!

To add onto that, do artists consider the different interpretations people may get from their music before they share the meaning behind the lyrics? Or is it better to let people make their own understandings from the songs?

I found it very interesting to do that before. I feel like I usually listen to how the artist talks about their songs in brief before they come out but I have never read into it too much.

I think I would listen to "California Friends" because I feel like I'm more of a mellow type of person and when they say that this type of music is happier I feel like I would like it. What the author did is describe the type of music by what type of moods there are and made it sound like each song was written for you.

This article was really neat and I always enjoy learning about new music coming out. The author made it fun to read as well where as she could have just made a list and been done. But she added her thoughts and gave us a sneak peak almost as what the song was about which made you want to listen to it more. I want to listen to the 1999 song because I love Troye Sivan, and any music by him I know I would love.

This article was very interesting and refreshing considering it wasn’t too serious or judgemental. It’s good to read something away from the political view.I feel the author just wanted to share some new diverse music that may be popular or deserves more attention. Even though I said the article wasn’t really judgemental, it was definitely opinionated considering the wide range of songs they could have chosen from. There aren’t really any facts that these song is are good but there’s no harm in listening to form your own opinion on them. Another reason this article is very opinionated is because they compared some of the artist to others. I think they did that to give perspective on what they might sound like to persuade you further to listen to these songs.

Did anyone actually listen to these song and go back to form your own agree/disagree with this author?
